jid1877 Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 Ok guys, after reading many reviews and taking some advice from you guys and people on another forum, this is what I came up with so far. I decide to go with RAID after all, I will just have to save some green and get another drive next year. I know I said I was not a fan of Abit, but I was not a fan of DFI but gave them another chance and been happy with the DFI board for the last 2 years. I read some reviews on this board and thats why I picked it. You guys may have differant ideas, thats the whole reason for this thread. I still have a week before my wife is going to order my new hardware for christmas so this still may change. ABIT IP35 Pro LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail SAPPHIRE 100216L Radeon HD 3850 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail May still get the 512 version but down graded to help with the higher priced motherboard. Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6750 - Retail G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ - Retail
taowulf Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 What about these? They are actually 5 dollars less but with a smaller rebate. Comes out to be 10 dollars more after rebate, but has 4-4-4-12 timings. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820231087

Not to say I will be doing alot of overclocking. Most my rids I run at stock, but after reading how well P35 and Intel overclocks, I just might. I have to save any where I can. mushkin 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail
taowulf Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 Keep in mind that if you over clock any of these, you will probably have to loosen timings.
jid1877 Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 Keep in mind that if you over clock any of these, you will probably have to loosen timings.Which means what? Like I said, I most my systems run at stock speeds, so I don't understand much about overclocking. But what you can teach me will help. All help is welcome. Even though you probably won't have a DFI board on your next system with all the mem settings included on most other boards, there is a lot of good info that can be applied to your Mem choice. taowulf Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 While a lot of this might not be directly applicable to your situation, a lot of the information give you a good idea of what the timings mean and how they are applied. http://www.diy-street.com/forum/showpost.p...179&postcount=
jid1877 Posted December 9, 2007 Posted December 9, 2007 For now I am going to stick with the G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ - Retail. I went to Abit's website and about 99% of the ones they tested were 5-5-5-5-18 or 5-5-5-5-15, and this G-Skill was one that was on there list. I rather get some memory that they say will work than ones that are not on there list. But thanks for the advice. I just want to make sure I have the best chance of booting from day one. I know there is no guarantee.
Branjo Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 With budget in mind the NQ's are the obvious choice @ $50 for 2Gbs but they aren't gonna give you much headroom when you overclock, and with that caliber of C2D lol you know your gonna, Plus you run more of a risk getting a DOA stick with going cheap. I'd also get a cheaper board and grab a nice Quad core, they make everyday things seem effortless, not saying the E6750 isn't a fantastic CPU either but for future proofing you can't go wrong with a Quad. All that being said no matter what C2D you decide on its gonna make your current rig seem like a snail. As for the GPU, well you are on your on there as there are a lot to choose from from both ATI and Nvidia, I was a big ATI fan but since I went with Nvidia I never looked back. Good luck on what ever you decide bro. Oh and welcome to the Dark Side

Oh and welcome to the Dark Side actually ANY DDR2-800 will give you plenty of headroom when it comes to overclocking as you'll drop down to a 667 divider and have more than enough headroom to walk it back up to 800... No reason to move to a Quad core if you aren't a video editor or such. No reason to move beyond those $50 RAMs either... Good choices...and you honestly won't ever need to overclock. I have an E6600 that is 2.4Ghz stock, and an E6400 that is 2.13Ghz stock, and I've stopped overclocking them...absolutely no need, especially when it comes to gaming these days...it adds almost zero to your gaming performance (since everything is all about the video card for 3d gaming now). Be careful about what advice you take to heart
