Imsochobo Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 I just saw the XFX 8800 GT 256 mb, priced quite high, is it really worth the money over a 3850. the 256 mb is a real bottleneck, 256 mb cards got a limit @ 1280x1024 at new games. And aint really good with AA either, where nvidia really got the upper hand over ATI, while the 8800 GT cannot provide the great AA capabilities as the 512 version got. so is it really worth the money. But, the funny thing is, the 8800 GT 256 MB compete against the 3850 ? Ami right ?, but it looks like it compete agianst the 3870 cause its at a higher price than 3870, by 10-15 bucks over here. Guess there will be a 3850 for my gf afterall.
Oceanborn Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 Not sure if the 256mb will make that much of a difference, GPU wise the 8800GT is much better.
Imsochobo Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 http://www.legitreviews.com/article/607/1/ ROOOOFL! total failure!. 3850 wins !
momoceio Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Maybe if it sold for about $150 then it would be more appealing for a budget gaming rig...but that price is too much.
Oceanborn Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 30fps difference for a 256mb reduction???? damn..!
Yukon Trooper Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 I would seriously consider a 512MB card, whether it be the 8800GT 512MB or a 3870 512MB. The extra memory is worth the extra money BIG TIME. Just look at those benchmarks man... It's weird because usually you'd expect more for your money when purchasing less. In this case you get more value when stepping up to 512MB from 256MB. BTW resolution and AA/AF isn't the only thing to consider when worrying about memory. Games continue to use larger and larger texture sizes and 256MB is just too damn wimpy no matter how you cut it. You'd be wasting your money IMHO. May as well look at 128MB cards while your at it! If you have to stick to 256MB for whatever reason then the 3850 is obviously the better card. At the 512MB level the 3870 and 8800GT are both good choices. The 8800GT is slightly faster in most, but not all, games. The 3870 is also slightly cheaper. The 3870 is a better value card but not by much. Go with 3870 512MB if it is $15 less than the 8800GT 256MB. That should be a no brainer... You have really weird pricing in Norway, lol. Imsochobo Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 well, how does the 3850 outperform the 8800 GT on 256 mb, wtf ? i just dont get it, the 3850 is a slower 3870, but wtf, the 8800 GT 512 outperforms 3870, but not 3850 at same specs just lower memory. Im going for a passive cooled 3850 for my gf though, with 512 mb.
Oceanborn Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 well, how does the 3850 outperform the 8800 GT on 256 mb, wtf ? My thoughts exactly....lol
Repr Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 its brilliant. the 8800GT 512 is a great card, but under that you gotta buy ATI . it would suck if ATI lost on all fronts to nvidia
