Mike1161 Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 When playing CoD4 my system locks up sometimes during game play. My GFX card temps have been reaching high 60s C, low 70s C regularly when playing. I have seen temps as high as 76 at times. The card idles in the low 50s C. I have already ordered an HR-3 Plus and fan in an attemp to lower the temps, but I am not sure that temp is my problem. Any ideas?ww
radodrill Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 GFX temps are usually higher than the CPU and chipset temps; under stock cooling my 8800 GTXs were idling at 70C, now running them underwater and they idle at 45-50C
Mike1161 Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 Radodrill If it was 70 at idle, under usage it had to increase under load, did you have any issues with it over heating during use? My CPU temp rarely goes over 45 underload and its very consistent.
radodrill Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 never had any stability issues with them on stock cooling; with the watercooling I have them clocked higher and at lower temps The CPUs use less power than the GPUs and even have a lower thermal threshold. 45C full load is common for a stock speed CPU under stock cooling; 70-75C isn't uncommon these days for top-tier GFX cards

n_w95482 Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Yeah, graphics cards can handle much higher temperatures than CPUs. The two cards I've used in my laptop regularly hit 80+ C and once 90 C. A co-worker was having overheating issues with her 6800 XT where it was hitting over 120 C and causing artifacts and reboots. It was idling at 102 and it even ran rthdribl fine at 112+. I think the chip's thermal cutoff was something around 120. If you're getting lockups, you might want to check some other components, such as the CPU or RAM. Any overclocking? Ran Memtest at all? Yukon Trooper Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Your card shouldn't be freezing up at 70-80. I think the 8800's are rated to work at over 100 degrees.
Mike1161 Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 I use rivatuner to adjust my fan speed as well as keep tabs on temps. I'll run mem test tonight and see what I see in the am.
Branjo Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Single slot coolers aren't really that good though, plus by the looks of the GT it blows the air back into the circulation of the case. So its gonna need more airflow around it. Maybe it would be a good idea to put one of those PCI exhaust fans under it to expel the hot air. RivaTuner is a great program, use it myself also. wevsspot Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 But Mike is running a 8800GTS 320mb card, and to my knowledge all of those cards are dual slot cooling solution cards (I don't think he has one of the new generation cards - but instead one of the original 8800GTS 320mb cards like this one here); http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814150173 With that being said, my 8800GTS 640mb card rarely breaks 65C after hours of BF2 and idles at 51C at 60% fan duty cycle. I've got my RT profile set to kick the fan up to 80% duty cycle if core temp is greater than 55C and then up to 100% duty cycle if core temp increases above 60C. And my card is clocked at 600 core/ 900 memory. I don't think that your temperatures are causing your problem though, as the 8800 series cards can get pretty darned hot and still run just fine. RT reports the T-Max operating temperature for my card as 92C, so you're not anywhere close to that yet. I'd do as you've already planned and put your rig through eight hours of Memtest and then eight hours of Orthos or Prime and see what the results are. Branjo Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Why the hell did I think it was a GT? I need to lay off the Scotch. Thanks Wev
Angry_Games Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 gpu's are typically rated at 90C before they start to fail. 76C while playing a 3d accelerated game with stock coolers are not out of the norm at all (which is why we get aftermarket sinks/fans lol)
