Should I stay or should I GO!!

Recommended Posts

Hello my opty152 @ 3G (single core) we just play games, and surf on it here. Now if I go to

E6750 OR E6600 some are saying you can get up to 3.5G. Will there be a big difference in playing Games?

The motherboard I will get GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L. How hot do these chips get on air(E6750-6600)

I know everyone has upgraded to dual core now. But I am not doing 3 things at the same time When p.c. is on we just want to play games on high

mostly run & gun

So the question is SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO!!!!(for all you clash fans)

Thanks for any info. you give.

Stay, you have to figure that going to C2D will cost you for a new mobo, RAM and CPU. You could always pick up a cheap dual core for your board if you wanted to, got a naked 170 in my FS thread. ;) You won't gain much in gaming from going dual core though and your video card is already up to snuff.

Many of the popular current titles don't fully exploit the potential of dual core processors.

When I went C2D I gave my trusty NF4 LP Ultra-D with X2 4800 to my daughter. So I was actually already a part of the dual core craze. I can tell you that my C2D smokes the Ultra-D package in everything I do. Video encoding, Photoshop, multitasking and just plain responsiveness. IMHO it was a great decision on my part to upgrade.

But I'll tell you, the hardware you have right now is more than capable if you can fight off the upgrade bug right now. If all you're concerned with is gameplay, I'd echo what Reel has already said, your video card is up to snuff so unless you have money to burn then there isn't a real compelling reason to upgrade.

But . . . I'd also agree with Branjo, if your budget allows it . . . My experience showed me that it was a worthy upgrade.

There are some nice P35 based boards out there right now that are working wonders with Quad Cores. Or it might make sense to wait a bit until we see how the X38 boards are going to perform over the long run.

If I were going to upgrade right now, I'd definitely go the quad core route with a good P35 or X38 board.

Move up to a dual core X2 and a better vid card as there is a LOT of life left in your machine.

Call of Duty 4 @ 1280x1024 with optimal graphics (the game chooses for me all the detail settings) = looks and plays FANTASTIC on this rig:

X2 3800+ dual core @ 2500Mhz

DFI Lanparty SLI-D

2x1GB Ballistix PC4000

3x36GB Raptor 10k rpm drives in RAID-0

ATI X1900XT 512MB PCI-E w/Omega 7.10 drivers, using ATI Tool for modest clock of 675/750

OCZ GameXstream 600w psu

The Witcher demo, CoD4 full game, HellGate London demo, everything plays great on it. Sometimes like Crysis demo you got to play at 1024x768 but playing at that res allows you to keep all the HDR, Anisotropic filtering, etc turned on (instead of having to lower all those details to play at 1280x1024 or 1600x1200).

No need to move to a Core2 if you don't want to spend for all new stuff. However, if you plan to sell what items need to be replaced to move to Core2, and it cuts the cost, I'd definitely go for a Core2 E6400 and DDR2-800 and P35 mobo and get an EASY 3Ghz overclock (3.5Ghz is something one does only with watercooling, and honestly I never ran any of my Core2 chips faster than 3Ghz on a daily basis as all the chips I've tested/owned will do 3Ghz on any 965, 975, P35 board with stock vcore and any more than that won't get you enough performance increase to warrant the damage being done to the hardware for long periods of time with that constant overclock)

ps here's what I recommend for low budget but killer Core2 performance:

just about any Corsair or OCZ DDR2-800 for sub-$100 (almost $50-ish with MIR's)

Gigabyte P35-DS3R motherboard ($129 at newegg)

Core2 E6400 up to whatever your budget can afford (a quad-core Q6600 is $279 and that's what I really want but I do a lot more than just games, which means I use mostly software that actually takes advantage of multi-core cpu's unlike most games, or the games that do, they don't have the kind of performance-per-core increase that my other software like Sony Vegas, Xvid encoding, etc does)

That's certainly a great thought that I didn't consider. Especially since they are practically giving away X2's right now.

X2 3800 Toledo core at NewEgg right now for $55.99+free shipping. Makes me sick remembering what I paid for that darn X2 4800 :(

AG, what video card would you recommend he get?

If you're gonna upgrade, get the Q6600 G0 version. So far, including me, most people have gotten up to 3.2G on air. Sucks for me, I hit the wall at 3.2, most gotten it to 3.6 or 3.7G. Side by side comparison with my X2 [email protected], the Q6600 smokes it in every game I play such as WoW, F.E.A.R, C&C Renegades, and so on. With Crysis coming out[if you're looking at it], it's supposed to benefits quad core, more then SLI. For me, the upgrade was well worth it and my pc boots up alot faster too, well 20 seconds faster.

oh oops I didn't see he already had an 8800 lol. There's no way I'd get rid of that for anything, not even the new 8800GT 512MB honestly. A dual core will give the gpu some more life in games that actually take advantage of multiple cores, but the dual core is more for everyday stuff honestly (all the random things we like to do with computers unless its pure porno surfing then you don't even need anything more than an AthlonXP 1400+ and 512MB RAM lol).

Dual core would hit the spot just right at the cheapest...just have to re-install windows (you don't, but 99.99% of us will recommend you do because not doing so can lead to unexpected hassles and oddities and other bad things lol)

if you wanna go all out for Xmas then get a Q6600 quad core, Gigabyte P35-DS3R motherboard, and some OCZ or Corsair DDR2-800 and get up to 3Ghz on air without any problem on all 4 cores (assuming you have something better than the stock cooler for it) and then you'll have filled that need to spend money ;)
