UPDATE 11/25 Grey Friday Buy for ExRoadie

Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving when retailers have traditionally brought their very best buys to the sales floor.

Since Black Friday isn't enough for retailers anymore they've implemented Grey Fridays this year.

Today, Friday, November, 2nd, was the very first Grey Friday and WalMart kicked out a Toshiba A2 HD DVD player for $99.00.

I've needed a new DVD player for a while since my trusty Pioneer started having issues but I've held off replacing it knowing that I'd buy either an HD or Blu-Ray player. Since a good DVD player would run me $60.00, I figured the extra $40.00 for HD DVD was an easy pill to swallow.

The player along with Transformers, The 300 and Planet Earth series came to $240.00 with tax title and license.

Now I'm not saying that the picture is incredible but... DAMN, the picture is incredible.

I'm locked in to a cable system that compresses the crap out of their signal so I've seen a bad HD signal. Seeing fast moving scenes with no blockiness or blur is a real treat. The salmon in the stream on the Planet Earth disc is breathtaking.

So for all you kids looking for deals this season keep an eye on a few of these sites for a bit of advanced warning.

my local best buy ran out of the a2's, and decided to sell the Toshiba a3, normally $300 for the same $99.00. Instead of just cancelling the sale as "sold out". But I'm not sure if that was only for people that had it pre-ordered or if you can just walk in and buy it at the low price. Not bad, best buy.

Best Buy and Circuit City around her are lame. They only have a couple of units of the sales items and that's it.

One local Walmart sold out before noon but three others still had units at 5pm when I grabbed my A2.

I also found the coupon for five free movies on the Toshiba website so I'll be getting some more content. I would have only spent my money to get The Thing but it's nice getting four more movies anyway.

This will be happening each Friday through Christmas so start planning your purchases using the links I provided.

Here's the Toshiba freebie link...

I bought the 360 add on about the beginning of the summer. HD DVD is incredible. I also have Planet Earth (what an epic documentary) and 300. No Transformers yet but I also have Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, King Kong (came with add on) and Relentless Enemies from National Geographic.

  • 3 weeks later...

I took advantage of another WalMart deal this weekend.

The PS3 80GB console with 15 free Blu-Ray movies.

So here's the details. The PS3 80GB IS backwards compatible with PS2 games while the new 40GB model isn't. This wasn't important to me since I don't have any console games but I wanted to make sure no one missed that in the fine print.

The deal expires at midnight Sunday the 25th so you don't have much time left.

10 of the 15 movies are of your choice as you purchase the console. WalMart has brought in extra stock for the promotion but you should still check with the store for selection before you go. The 10 free movies are limited to $30.00 or less in value and I was able to pickup every movie I wanted that's available at this time. When you check out in the electronics department, they will override the price and it will print $0.00 on the receipt.

The five additional movies are available as a rebate from Sony. Check the details on the WalMart sales link below to make sure you don't double pick a film from the rebate selection. Click the "Learn More" link in the description for details.

The only reason I went for this deal was the high costs of Blu-Ray players. A high quality Blu-Ray player that is "profile 1.1" compatible is over $400.00 right now with no price reductions in the near future. Sure there are some deals on older "profile 1.0" players but they will not be firmware upgradeable to "1.1" or any further updates. The PS3 is fully upgradable as the "profile" changes.

Plus, it does a whole lot more than just play Blu-Ray media.

So do your homework and good luck.
