wevsspot Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Darned good question E! And probably one of the first we should have asked. I assumed he was back at stock since he flashed the BIOS and loaded optimized defaults.
Guy BlueSummers Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Quick Reply I realize it's probably kind of a waste, but I don't overclock any of my equipment. All four power connectors are on the board. I moved the memory module to the top orange slot (#2) and it seems to be working now. A timer has been set to see how long it goes until it reboots (if at all). The machine has been on wall power for the last several tests. More to follow! **EDIT** HOLY MAJOLY! At 6 minutes 40 seconds, the memtest began vomiting red bars. 52,000 errors so far!
Guy BlueSummers Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Ah; I rebooted the computer and now it will not enter the memtest like before. I think the absurd results that occured a moment ago and this failure to enter the test are related.
Guy BlueSummers Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Quick Reply Reseated the RAM so memtest would run. Running test 5 as per your instructions, test 8 to folow. ========================================== Test 5: 6495 Errors.
wevsspot Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Ok, Sounds like we are making progress then. Our first task will be to get Memtest done on each stick individually to make sure both sticks are good. Test each stick by itself in the top most orange slot. Failures in Memtest do not necessarily mean you have bad RAM, it could also indicate that further tweaking is needed in the memory section of BIOS in order to get all of your RAM settings straightened out. Once we can get one stick running good (assuming that both sticks of RAM are in working order), it usually doesn't take much to get them running in dual channel. What test number were you on at the 6 minute 40 second mark when Memtest started spilling errors?
AnUnknownSource Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 That board and memory with the 4/6 BIOS should work just fine at optimized defaults... but who knows. Wevs got youon the right track as usual, so I'm gonna duck out (until I have .02 to put in again :tooth: )
Guy BlueSummers Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Wow! Are there any awards for crashing MemTest 86? The issue occured during test 8. Continuing testing... Stick 2, All Tests, Slot 2...Complete Came back all clear for tests 1-10, 1 trial. Stick 1, All Tests, Slot 2... Began going bananas during test 4. --> Curiosity; I tried booting with just the one clear stick and running 3dMark. It wouldn't even launch the program before locking up. wevsspot Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Ok, Well we are making progress. Let's go back to stick #2 and run memtest overnight and see if it passes. If it passes remove stick #2, put stick #1 back in and see if it fails during test four again. It's looking like you have a bad stick of ram. Test four does this; Test 4 uses the same algorithm as test 1 but the data pattern is a random number and it's complement. This test is particularly effective in finding difficult to detect data sensitive errors. A total of 60 patterns are used. The random number sequence is different with each pass so multiple passes increase effectiveness. And going way back to the beginning, are you still using a BFG video card? Guy BlueSummers Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 The wierd keeps getting wierder. When I placed the two sticks together and ran the memtest, it did three full passes without a single error. Also, the ram was identified as 200 MHz and DDR401 when tried independantly, but as 157MHz and DDR 315 when tried together. Bizzare. Awaiting further instructions. Yes, this is all still with the BFG Card. If I understand correctly, I'll now stress-test the good stick, then the bad stick.
Guy BlueSummers Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Quick Reply The good stick has passed over-night testing without a single error. 31 passes. I'll now begin testing the bad stick. The bad stick encountered errors during test 5: 1 error at 8%, and a flood of errors at 97%. Test 4 came back clear.
wevsspot Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 GBS, Lucky for you that you have OCZ RAM. At this point I would contact OCZ, explain your testing methodology and the results of your testing. There are also a couple of the OCZ guys that cruise through here and over at DFI Global Support Forum. You could give a shout out to them by starting a new thread and provide a linky to this thread here. If your memory is still under warranty I'm sure they will be happy to help you out. A couple of things still on my mind though. 1. Is this a matched kit of memory (i.e. did you purchase these modules as a dual channel memory kit?) 2. What happens with your graphics now if you boot with only the good stick installed in the top orange slot? Still getting crashes and what not or has the problem cleared up?
