Opteron, concensus used to be the 165 for price and great OC'er. But the higher clocked ones have gotten cheaper.

A dual core chip is the way to go. I don't know what your budget is, but I'll provide a couple of links.

 

The "Toledo" CPUs overclock very well. NewEgg has one for cheap. I have this one.

The Opteron CPUs have been famous here on the forum. I don't own 1, but everyone here says that they too overclock very well. NewEgg has these as well.

If you do decide to get the "top of the line" chip for Socket 939, you would have to get the FX-60. I have one of these. It's a very solid chip. But you will only find those on Ebay as they are fading away from the market. You had better hurry up and get one while there are still a few left.

I like the 10x multi on the Opteron 170, which would help with your PC3200 RAM vs only having a 9x multi on the 165. What's wrong with your 4400?

invest in better cooling (h2o)then overclock your 4400 till it bleeds, you can then transplant the cooling to the next platform.

I agree with 3stars I would oc the cpu you've got to the max. It might get you by long enough to upgrade your mobo/ram/cpu to get something this gen when the new stuff comes out in a few months.
