iamkoza Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 SMART has told me my 250 GB junk drive is going bad. It is still under warranty. I'm a little leary of sending my drive back to WD with information on it. What do you guys typically do in this situation? thanks
Uncle_Mojo Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 If you can, back it up and use the WD tools (available on the website) to write zeros to the drive. If you can't, then just send it in. I doubt there's much to worry about, but you just never know.
eelemus Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 rofl......i know if for some reason i could NOT clean a drive of mine, there waint NO way i would send it to anyone, not even my mom....although the chances are small that they would even hook it up.....it is still a chance, and thats just me
CPDMF Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 If it still works without issue, use DBAN. Writing 0's to the drive isn't very secure.
iamkoza Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 Well, I was lazy and didnt try DBAN until it was too late, the drive has now failed, I tried dban, but it was going ridiculously slow... (699 hours to complete the wipe). Looks like I might as well destroy it now
momoceio Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 DBAN is always slow unless you do the quick mode wipe
iamkoza Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 DBAN is always slow unless you do the quick mode wipe I used autonuke, which was apparently the short method, It was moving fine until it (the drive) clicked rather loudly for a minute or 2 then it slowed to a snails crawl
AnUnknownSource Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 stick it right next to the magnet of a large speaker... leave it for a few hours... then don't worry at all about sending it in :-)
