I sent away for a lapping kit and am using my old xp-90 with it's 92cm blue led adjustable TT fan. I'm swithing from socket 754 to am2 and i sent away for the special bracket that i need, but i would like to hear about some results and improvements (if any) anybody got from lapping this heatsink. I don't like the nickel plating they put on there.

Why on earth would they cover up the nice copper better condutive copper base with nickel plating? Never could make any sense of that move.

Any input would most humbly be recieved. ;-0

Thanks in advance

As a matter of fact, I have lapped an XP-90. I did it after the base became slightly "bowed" creating a low spot near the center of the base. A long lapping session, starting with 600 grit, brought the surface back flat and useable again. In the process, all the nickel plating was removed. I don't have any meaningful temp information, as the uneven base yielded poor cooling. Given the retention design of this cooler, and the ammount of material I had to remove, I think that lapping your XP-90 couldn,t help but improve cooling.

nickel doesn't tarnish or corrode so they put a thin layer of it over the copper so that it always looks good (and again, doesn't corrode...but anyone who has put one on more than a few heatsinks over time has seen the copper base underneath)

I lapped one of my HR-05 chipset pipes and it came out mirror smooth but the XP-90 is a bit mother, lots of area so I'm waiting for my glass guy to show up with some 4"x8" 1/4" thick glasslets (heh, I just made that up) before I get started.

If he can get enough of them, I might have him shave/shape them a bit and sell them here. He was telling me today he even had access to colored glass which might be pretty cool (but it's true flat glass stuff, not no chinzy thin piece that covers a picture in a frame lol)

That's a hell of nice lapp job Soundx98! I was impatient and got all my stuff in before the lapp kit came and the bottom of my xp-90 looked better than i thought, so i just put a dab in the middle of the cpu and pushed it straight down clipping it on in a criss-cross, then giving it a little wiggle to get any air trapped in there out, and she idles @ 31-33c with room temp around 75f, so i guess it's ok.

Thanks for the input guys. :)
