Another Build advice

Recommended Posts

Gotta build 2 PC's each with Q6600's and 8800GTS's. 1 is for me and 1 is for the "trouble n strife" (Wife)

I want a PC that I just dont need to OC, im sick of trying to push my old NF3 horse to do things it just cant do, so I want a rig where the need for OCing is a year or two off at least.

My List

2 x Q6600 http://www.newegg.com/product/Product.asp?...N82E16819115017

2 x 8800GTS 320Mb http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814130082

2 x 2x1Gb ??????????????????????????????????

1 x Gigsbyte DS3 3.3 (have one already) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16813128012

2 x OCZ StealthXStream 600w http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16817341010

I have had my NF3 for about 3 years and before that it was an NF2 so I have never really had a "semi" future proof PC before, and I wants one.

I think the only extravagant components are the Q6600 and the 8800 all the rest are going to be bought with "budget" in mind.

So will the StealthXstream be enough to power this? 4 x 18A 12v rails

Do the Gigabyte DS3's like the Quad core's? they say they are supported but ya just don't see many people with the combo

and what speed of memory will suit the Quad best? 800,900,1000 etc

PS these will be for XP pro firstly but probably Dual booting with Vista at some point in the future.

Thanks to all for any advice

Give the trouble and strife the DS3 and pick up a P35 or X38 (when released) for yourself.

I have used the G.Skill HZ's , Crucial Ballistix, OCZ titanium and the TeamXtreem I have now in DDR2 800 for 2 X 1gig sets. I really like the Crucial, price was right (with rebate) clocks like a dream and runs cool..

So DDR800 is still good enough then , cool as they are at good prices ATM

For a P35 board, how does the DFI blood Iron look to you dude, there are no reviews on the egg but via google they don't look half bad.

The P35 DFI Lanparty looks freaking awesome though but way out of my price range for a mobo check this bad boy out http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813136037

I will more than likely go for the P35 DS3L for cost reasons but no RAID at all :( but no biggy

The DFI LP P35 sure has a certain appeal; but I prefer the orange/yellow color scheme of the earlier lanparties.

Since you're on a budget I'd say the blood iron, a P35, X38, or reference 680i or 650i (especially if you get the LT version) should be sufficient.

Haven't seen much on the Blood Iron and don't know anybody with one. Might ask Praz on that one though..

I only know one person with a gigabyte P35, he says it clocks quads just fine, but he would go for the DS3R and spend the extra 30 bucks next time.

I have an abit IP35 vanilla that isn't a bad board at all, plenty of features with a nice layout. Not the greatest clocker but everything works as it should otherwise. I think a couple of bios updates would make it a nice clocker but abit seems to be concentrating on the IP35 Pro Snake. If you find yourself in need of a board let me know. I have a couple laying around that I could loan you until you get what you want..

Thanks CP I appreciate that dude.

I only use a 19" monitor with the 1152x864 res so a 640Mb would be way more than I need.

DDR800 RAM is what im gonna go for, 2 x 1gb kit whatever is cheap and good at the time I drop the hammer on the egg. the crucial does look tempting though

I have 2 stealthXstream's on my list but is there any chance the powerstream would power an 8800GTS? Its a great PSU and if I could cut the cost of another stealth that would be a plus.

I think it would power it just fine. If it can't you can always just buy a new one. Might as well give it a chance.
