Angry_Games Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 Piracy might actually help sell cd's? http://www.michaelgeist.ca/content/view/2347/125/ Canada's blank cd-r tax: http://neil.eton.ca/copylevy.shtml
red930 Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Pay special attention to the label on the media package since you pay the levy if they use the terms "music" or "audio" even on the 650MB media. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_copyi...y#United_States US buyers have been paying a levy on 700MB CD-R media since it became available. The original 650MB CD-R media does not have the levy on it which is why it's always cheaper unless they label it for "music" or "audio" Unless you really need that extra 50MB of storage space it's cheaper to buy the 650MB media. Thraxz Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Sweet thread. Glad I read it. I fear though that I simply don't have the ear to really REALLY detect the differences between it all. I mean, I can sure as hell hear the difference between modern digital recording of, say, shitknot... er slipknot, the stuff out of the 70's by Simon and Garfunkel and the old 8 track analog recordings by Bathory. But that's about it. Either way, this is really informative. Thanks guys.
kitfit1 Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 I fear though that I simply don't have the ear to really REALLY detect the differences between it all. If you were to sit down and listen to some good recordings through an average sound system, then the same recordings through a high-end system, you WILL be able to tell the difference. In the same way that you would be able to tell the difference between a good recording and a bad recording. The problem nowdays(and maybe always has been)is that most recordings are mediocre and gimmicky, at best, and most sound systems(if you want to call them that)are sold at the local Walmart for $200. Music, like most things, will only ever be as good as the listener is prepared to pay for it's production and reproduction.
Angry_Games Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 yep sorta the same reason I have a $1000 Jackson guitar and $500 Boss GT-8 effects unit instead of a $100 starter Gibson and $50 practice amp
KimTjik Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 The cheapest and most painful way of realizing how bad some recordings are is to buy some good headphones (like AKG K701 or Sennheiser HD650), and combine those with a pre-amplifier with a quality phone port or a dedicated headphone amplifier and a fairly good source (CD or Vinyl). Those headphones give a sound delivery which is equivalent to awfully expensive loudspeakers (for some reason when searching for prices in the US, headphones such as these ones are about 30 % more expensive than here in EU). But here comes the culprit: many, if not most recordings - just like kitfit1 wrote - sound so bad that you can't stand listening to more than a couple of songs! Even Pete Townsend would make a better job as a producer even though half deaf! Since I'm mostly into Jazz, "Classical" (we tend to more describe it as art-music, because Classical is a terrible description; if anyone know of a English equivalent I would appreciate to know it) and alternative modern I'm blessed, because folks understanding how music should sound are a lot more active in these circles. I still like R & B, but in this genre you find more crappy music than ever before. I mean there exist some rap-groups with integrity like The Roots (or why not some old De La Soul stuff), but nowadays the industry is invaded by horrible perverts, believing their snout is solely a tool for sucking dope, thinking that bling-bling is the greatest gift to humankind, or themselves though fat and ugly being the greatest gift to women... sorry they don't believe in the dignity of women, they just have . (or at least some parts of them at times chosen by them). If they could stay out of everything else but their own damn music it would be fine (I give them credit for knowing how to make money), but when they start to be producers for others it becomes ridiculous. I would prefer Scooby Doo over most other spooky dudes - or what they call themselves - as producers. As it is now some of them destroy pretty fine songs by an overload of badly chosen sounds. I'll better stop here, because this makes me upset, and still it's nothing of life and death importance.
nghisus Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Everybody just wants their stuff "hot" instead of properly equalized. Some people laugh, but that's why I listen to Tori Amos. Nice intelligent musics.
