Story> "Forgent Networks (www.forgentnetworks.com) has announced that it owns the software patent on JPEG compression technology, and has stated that it is "in contact" with computer, software, camera, and other digital imaging product manufacturers regarding licensing terms. This ambush of the digitial imaging industry will probably stand as the worst public relations nightmare a company can inflict upon itself." < //.story> And a link to the PR... http://ir.forgent.com/ireye/ir_site.zhtml?...&item_id=314044
Inu_Yasha Posted July 19, 2002 Posted July 19, 2002 If that happens, i bet someone else is going to come out with a newer (and maybe even better) type of picture compression.
RaTeD-R Posted July 19, 2002 Posted July 19, 2002 Yeah, Forgent Networks is getting really .. Jpegs are by far my fave type of digital image, and I'm very greatfull that Forgent Networks invented it. On the other hand.........what the heck?!? Just what this country needs, more legislation! As cool as jpegs are, they probably aren't too hard to replicate. I agree w/ the "worst public relations nightmare" statement also. As far as I'm conserned, if Forgent Networks wants to be all . and start bothering people/companys about licensing, I'll just convert all my jpgs and never look back......bastards.
