Bring an 8 core Mac Pro to its knees?

The "Mac Fanboy" er IT Director at work decided we needed new Mac Pros for all the control rooms. This is completely pointless and huge waste of money from the entire tech staffs perspective, considering how TDM Pro-Tools works. The Mac is basically a "host" to the DAE engine which runs on PCI-e cards in an expansion chassis.

Anyway, I'm gonna be doing a bunch of work on them so they fit into the racks in the machine rooms. Basically chopping the "looped feet" off. During this time I'm gonna try and get one set aside to run some benchmarks on and some stress testing. Does anyone have any suggestion on how I might bring one of these to its knee's. I know its a dumb question, but it's under warranty so why not?

you could take the CPU's heatsink off and run 8 instances of some mac version of a CPU burn-in... that'd probably knock it's d#ck in the dirt...

Or you could throw it in the tub and push the power button. :)

Probably best to not resort to destruction unless it's a total POS; then I'd be more inclined to go for some C4 or TNT, etc.

There is a mac version of Prime95 available...not sure how to set it up correctly on that rig of course but 8 instances with a core apiece oughta do it.

Gonna get warm I'll bet.

Excellent. The thing heating up like a furnace is the point I'm trying to get across to this guy. Putting this thing in a rack with tons of other heat producing gear should be interesting to say the least.

maybe the thermal protection will kick in with 8x prime. That would sure be proof that it can't cut it; especially if the whole room gets hot when you've got all of them on 8x prime.

If it takes everything in stride I'd really be impressed that Apple could configure something that stable you don't need a BIOS to mess with. Somehow I doubt it though. Guess I'll find out in the next week or so when I get around to abusing these things.
