Jachyra007 Posted June 2, 2007 Posted June 2, 2007 Has anyone heard of 3D printing, mainly in metals? http://www.bathsheba.com/ The technology link from the opening paragraph explains the process, and the gallery/shop to the left contains some amazing pieces of art. To bad I dont understand nearly enough about mathematics to understand the formulae necessary for each piece, but definitely worth a look-see
shatteredsteel Posted June 2, 2007 Posted June 2, 2007 Our school actually rented a 3D printer that used plastics, it was really neat to watch our autoCAD designs being created without any milling or excess material for that matter. red930 Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 I've seen the systems that use UV sensitive liquid polymer and a UV laser to harden the material. It starts "drawing" the object at the bottom layer first then as each layer is completed the base lowers for the next layer to be built on top. When the object is complete the base rises back above the liquid. Once the the prototype dries you can handle it quite roughly. With all the new construction and reconstruction going on along the coast since Katrina even the architects are using the system. The East Biloxi Coordination Relief and Redevelopment Agency is using the system to provide a physical model of a home so the owners can get a better idea of what it will look like when rebuilt and especially for new construction. They can prototype the structure in less than an hour compared to building a model by hand which can take days and introduce errors.
