Has anyone used one of these notice any speed improvement or lower ping times over onboard or PCI network adapters? I don't think there would be an decrease in latency but was just curious about it. I would like to use that 1x PCI-E slot....

Probably not very many people would consider one as the price is really up there. I mean as costly as a very nice MOBO and way higher.

Had a Broadcom chip based one and wasn't as impressed as I thought I'd be.

Sold it and replaced it with a Syba SD-SA2PEX-2E PCI-e(1x) to E-Sata card in my 150 machine. This card is amazingingly fast for only a 2-port controller. It's damn near as fast as my $260 LaCie 4-port E-Sata PCI-e(8x) card in my 185 at 1/9the the price. Port Multiplier ready using a SiL3132 chip, and RAID5 capable too with a BIOS update.

Short answer to are PCI-E NICs worth it; Keep looking.
