Guest Loony Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 I'm looking for the sweetest tactical shooter. I want something more "real" than BF(2)142. Something you have to actually hide and be smart, not running in guns blazing and chucking 'nades. I liked the Splinter Cell game I played awhile ago with my friend, and I loved SOCOM on the PS2. What do you guys think?
Anospa Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 Haven't played much of the new ghost recon games, but the old ones were real hardcore like that. Check out FarCry on hardest difficulty, you're supposed to be Rambo, but you die if you play that way. I think the Rainbow six games are also very tactical, never really played them though. sailindawg Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 GRAW - excellent graphics, SP good RS6, OGR - excellent, but dated graphics, MP community is slowly dying Operation Flashpoint - excellent, somewhat dated graphics ARMA - More or less successor to OFP (by originators of OFP, BIS), unlike GRAW, stays true to original, but with much updated graphics, AI. Buggier than hell, will find the bottlenecks of your system. The latest beta patch has helped performance. Game strong points: very good mil sim, very good mission editor, very good MP coop, very strong & active & talented mod community, BIS (game dev) is small but very committed company that is listening to the ARMA community and providing updates. OFP was supported for the past 5 or 6 years by BIS. BIS provides an excellent sandbox to play in. More mature community in general around the game (mil sim). Heintooga Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 I liked the Splinter Cell game I played awhile ago with my friend, and I loved SOCOM on the PS2. What do you guys think? I tried SC but it was too linear for my taste. I'm hooked on the Hitman series. Though the suggested approach is for silent assasin it's a blast to sneak around takin em all out. centy Posted May 21, 2007 Posted May 21, 2007 The original ghost recon would be a great game for a laptop I'd say, doesn't matter about the graphics.
krazypoloc Posted May 21, 2007 Posted May 21, 2007 Another vote for Rainbow 6 Vegas. The cover function just works flawlessly. I wish all tactical shooters worked this well. Also check out S.T.A.L.K.E.R. it kinda falls into that category but has quite a bit more depth than your average "here are the bad guys go kill them" type game. Angry_Games Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Rainbow Six: Vegas freaking awesome. Has the Gears of War thing where you hide behind corners, boxes, anything that can be cover. It's very very very awesome game, runs on the latest Unreal3 engine (so it will bring your rig to it's knees if you totally crank everything up and don't have SLI/Crossfire), and best of all...Co-op multiplayer over LAN or internet!!!! you can either play the missions (however they are sorta broken, like when you have to hack a computer to move to the next mission, you just have to kill the server and restart the game in the next level grrrr), or what we like most is Terrorist Hunt. you can choose to have light enemies, a good amount of enemies, or friggin 50 or so enemies in a map that isn't too large (some are small and intense firefights break out in corridors, some are pretty decent sized and have you always getting shot at from things like rooftops, ditches, windows, behind vehicles, etc). You can play normal or the "hardcore" which means you get shot once or twice in the chest and that's it, you be dead. We get 4 players going over the LAN or over Hamachi (LAN over the internet, it's pretty cool, so you can play multiplayer on my LAN game from your house, and i live in Boise, ID) with some Teamspeak voice and play co-op. Plus I have a dedicated server for it so it runs damn nice. I'm not a big fan of the hardcore tactical shooters usually, but there's something extremely fun about this game. I really love being able to hide behind boxes, cars, corners and fire blindly over the top or around the corner, as well as leaning out and getting good aim. Oh and you can toss a grenade around corner, low or high, as well as prime it so it will explode right as it's in the air heh...and roll it under vehicles if I'm not mistaken. And flash nades and smoke nades work on enemies finally. I've flashed a room full of 'em and my buddies rolled in from each side of the doorway with thermal goggles on and four or five bursts from silenced mp5's and blammo that room is clear. You can seriously get some action that plays out just like anti-terrorist videos and movies, it's that cool. And the single-player missions are pretty good too. Your team works well, you can have them line up on each side of the doors and tell them to wait while you go to another door to the room, put your snake cam under the door to see whats going on in that room, put a red target on enemies so your boys will shoot them first when coming in (like if the baddies are holding someone hostage with a gun to their head, you mark him to be killed first to save the hostage), then command them to open the door and flashbang everyone at the same time you pop your door and put a burst in the two dudes closest to you. I've not finished single player yet either by myself or co-op with my buddies because keep playing that damned Terrorist Hunt (Calypso Casino and Kill House!!!) Smoken Joe Posted July 1, 2007 Posted July 1, 2007 There is a little known game Sniper that is very challenging but the grapics suck. FEAR when on max hiding is a must it may not be realistic but it is not a guns blasing game either.
