Which rad for tec?

Recommended Posts

Which rad would be better suited for a TEC, the Swiftech MCR-320 or the HW Labs Black Ice Xtreme III?

this would be used with a Swiftech MCP655 and the new Swiftech 226W TEC.

I hope you're not thinking of using that TEC on the CPU in your sig. If so, you won't get far as that CPU has a coldbug at -10C

Can't you get around coldbugging by booting with the cooling systems off and then turning them on?

Yup you can! There are even timer relays that will the automatic turn on for the pelti + i doubt that he can get to the -10C unless he plants some monster pelti on the chip. :)

Not entirely true catkicker. I've seen CPU's coldbugged at 0 Celsius, which a decent TEC can easily reach on a CPU at idle.

The problems with cold-bugged CPU's aren't only limited to start up. Once they hit their cold-bugged temps at idle they will freeze up. Only way around that is to have an app like prime95 running in the background to keep CPU temps up and this creates other issues like the immense amount of heat that will be coming off your rad keeping your room very warm.

You really might want to rethink your venture into TEC cooling. I used them off and on for years. They are a real pain for 24/7 use, requiring alot of prep time some maintenance and on a heavily overclocked rig can really make a room an uncomfortable place to be.

I sold a TEC setup to LikeWhoa awhile back, we became good friends after that deal, if we would have been good friends before that or I wasn't try to dump the setup I had I would have told him not to bother with a TEC setup. :) Ask him how miserable life became when he was trying to dump the heat from a 320 watt pelt and the CPU..

alright. Well, really Im just buying my first watercooling setup now. And Im planning on buying a TEC this summer just to play around with it. And thats why I wanted to make sure that the RAD is strong enough to handle the pelt. Until then Ill be using it with an Apogee GT CPU block. Im going to buy the HW labs RAD. Thanks for everyones input.:)

Agree with this! A pelti is the best thing to play with in winter because it creates enough heat to heat up a entire room! ;-)

Well, I went with a Thermochill PA120.3. I think thats a good choice.

Let us know how it works out for you! Some pics are always welcome! If you need some good secondary PSU for your pelti you can contact me! I used to play a lot with peltis in the past and got some stuff left! Neoprene, coldplates, fluid tape etc.
