Protius Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 Due to the recent Intel price drops, I'm really considering switching to a e6600, i can't decide if i should just wait, maybe put my money towards a bigger monitor & dx10. The main problem though is that i would have to sell my current cpu, mobo and ram to get enough $$$, any thoughts on how much i could get? Or should i not even switch at all..... Too many choices thx for your thoughts
Voltes-5 Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 Judging from what you have and having to sell it off, you are better off with the current system and upgrading to DX10 later, much later imo. Heck man, just because the prices are going down it does not mean your system is not good anymore. The only reason I upgraded from an Expert/Opty is that all this stuff that we do is a hobby to me where I can freely support it. But if I were to sell off my system to get the next best thing, would not do it. You got a great system there, stay with it a while, get a better monitor if you want. CPDMF Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 939 still has plenty of life and is a strong CPU. If you have the cash and feel the urge for new toys then I would say by all means grab an E6600 and have fun with it. Selling your stuff now with current AMD prices and known issues with the CFX3200 wouldn't bring you much money, definitely not enough to fund a new rig. Guest Lavell Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 I agree with Voltes-5 100%. There are only a handful of games (if that) that support DirectX 10. There's no need to upgrade now, unless you want to upgrade the monitor. By the time DirectX 10 games becomes plentiful... 1) Windows Vista Service Pack 1 would have been released. 2) Prices on Intel processor would become much cheaper than what they are now. 3) New technology would have been released to make current computer components obsolete and a lot cheaper. This was my approach when I upgraded from Socket A to Socket 939. I skipped Socket 754 altogether. When Socket AM2 was released, all components related to Socket 939 were coming down in prices. Today, Socket 939 is still an excellent platform to hang onto for another 2 - 3 years. If you do decide to upgrade anything, upgrade your monitor. Now is the time to upgrade to a widescreen LCD flat panel monitor. Nowadays, you can get a 22-inch widescreen LCD monitor for less than $400.00. To me, that's a steal! Guest r3d c0m3t Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 As everyone else seems to agree (as do I) you have a pretty hefty rig there, no reason to sell off the parts for hardware that's not yet truly supported for it's main features - DX10. Socket 939 still has plenty of life left, but if you want to spice things up you should probably go for a new monitor and an 8800GTS 320MB if you're still looking to prepare for DX10. If you look around hard enough, you could most likely be able to snag both for less than $500, maybe even less than $450.
General Septem Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 Agreed, although depending on your monitor you may be better off with the GTS 640. For higher resolutions, having only 320 MB of RAM can bottleneck your card.
Protius Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 i'm thinking of getting this monitor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16824001096 and wait for dx10 to get popular
watsonte Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 i'm thinking of getting this monitor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16824001096and wait for dx10 to get popular Certainly not a bad choice for a monitor... And if your going to wait for DX10 to become widely used...you might be waiting a while, and you will have to get Vista if you want to use DX10... Either way I see nothing wrong with waiting...I personally am waiting until I find a game that really "forces" me to upgrade...at this point the hardware isn't the limiting factor, its the software... Kingfisher Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 I sold my 939 system for around $450( 4400+,2GB RAM and Mobo) and it was pretty much a wash. I did upgrade my video card and sold my old one. It's usually how I upgrade, once I find some new hardware I like, I sell my old stuff and move on. You could sell your hardware an maybe get $300-$350. p0tter Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 There is a Rumor DX10 will be ported to XP.. (hope its true) If you sold the rig, DFI P955-S (hitting 450FSB) $150 G.Skill 2GBHZ (D9's) DDR2 800 $160 e4300 $121 $431 Keep your cards, may need a cooler.. Guest Lavell Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 Agreed. If I was upgrading my monitor, this would be the monitor to get. I have a Radeon X1800 Crossfire setup in "The Portable BatComputer" coupled with a 19-inch LCD monitor (see pictures underneath my sig). Those cards will kick serious a$$ with that 22-inch LCD monitor. That's definitely a good monitor to go after, and with a native resolution of 1680x1050 you don't even need to go after a new video card your X1800CF setup is more than willing to flex it's muscle.
