signmeuptoo Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Make ABSOLUTELY SURE you installed your Heatsink/Fan on the CPU correctly! Did you follow the instructions EXPLICITELY? I have heard of people doing bone headed things such as leaving the plastic cover on the HS/F and actually installing it that way!!! You must NEVER get fingerprints on contact surfaces where heatsinks go. Arctic Silver makes Arctic Clean, a cleaning kit that I like better than acetone and alchohol because it isn't noxious and isn't flammable and isn't expensive but will last you tons and tons of builds. Arctic Silver's website has instructions on how to apply thermal compound and how to clean parts. Have you installed the RAM sticks in the right slots? Did you RTFM? If you didn't, shame on you!!! (That is Read The Freaking Manual) to the motherboard, it is VERY important that you read it religiously. Also, WARNING: NEVER EVER EVER PLUG OR UNPLUG ANYTHING INSIDE A COMPUTER WITH THE SUPPLY PLUGGED INTO THE WALL SOCKET! Power supplies in today's computers apply STANDBY VOLTAGE to the motherboard, even though it seems "off" it isn't purely "off". Just a few tips for starters. READ READ READ, that is what I am doing, I have built systems for years, and yet, I am still learning things. The good news is this is an awesome forum run by terrific folks. Guest r3d c0m3t Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 As well what the others have suggested you should absolutely make sure everything is plugged in snuggly...make sure the headers are in the right places and also make sure that they're pushed all the way onto the pins (don't push too hard though.) Also make sure all of the auxiliary power connectors are in there tightly. There's a small chance that there could be (could be don't get nervous) a shortage in line from where the headers are connected to your case's front panel PCB. It's better to be safe than sorry.
signmeuptoo Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Also, since you are new to this: Make certain that the BACK of the motherboard isn't somehow shorting to the metal case, as this is a very common n00b mistake. In other words, that you ONLY have standoffs in the RIGHT places. Hopefully you haven't made such a mistake because it can mean death to a motherboard and other parts. So remove the motherboard and look at where each stand off is lined up, see if EVERY single one is where you WILL be putting a grounded screw, if not, you have MAJOR problems. Guest r3d c0m3t Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Are you sure this isn't the OS installation screen you're experiencing? Because if it is...don't do anything but what it tells you to do (i.e. press F8 to continue, etc) If you're experiencing a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) then my friend...you could have a serious hardware problem.
