Yeah, I know guys, I was on the phone with wife overseas listening to her cry about money troubles and I was stressed out, sorry. I know how fortunate I am to have what I have, I have scraped for quite a while and gotten a lot of help from others to finance it. I used to be a well paid technologist, but not now.

I ran memtest at BIOS "optimized/default" settings, after updating the BIOS to the latest, ran it for about 3 hours and no issues. I am sure I need to run it longer than that, but how important is it to run memtest, say, 18 hours? Not having access to the computer for that long is aggrivating, heh.

Anyways, I apologize for snapping, I was wrong, I am under a little bit of stress. I reinstalled Windows and it has been several hours now with no crash, I suspect a couple things could have been issues ALONG WITH THE POWER SUPPLY: Everest: It has some things it says could make some systems hang, so I disabled them. I skipped installing some of my anti spyware programs this time as well. I am currently running my distributed computing projects though, and so far things seem better.

I think this is the greatest site since sliced bread and I do want to make friends here. FWIW, I too often blame the power supply and I am always telling others they need to invest in the best supply they can in other forums where my more basic knowledge (I am a former Silicon Valley Technologist) is useful. I want that new supply so bad my head could burst, but wife has some dire issues and I don't have a real income right at the moment, so... At least this is a Trio and Seasonic. In fact, from what I understand, all three "rails" aren't really separated, therefore the total supply load capacity can go anywhere it needs to.

I wish that darned cable wasn't bad, I think that could have been what hosed the HDD. I am hassling with Antec and they keep delaying testing my motherboard I sent in to them, they keep giving excuses. I don't think I'll ever buy another Antec supply after this fiasco.

Thanks guys, and g'bless

Yeah, well, only using 2 HDDs right now and just the sound card. I pulled the USB card as I don't really need it ATM anyways and it would suck down juice a lot. Much of my power draining USB devices are on a powered Hub. According to the various supply calculators out there I am fine, within the recommended amount, but we all know how realistic those things are... I would love to get definitive knowledge on just how many amps the board draws on each rail, it would be quite useful. If I had the right kind of amp probe I'd read it, but I don't, sigh.

I guess I could disconnect the sound card, but it is very important to me and don't like the idea of it sitting outside of a case knocking around.

I only have 80mm fans running and the 120mm CPU fan, I could turn off one of the fans (I don't have the side of the case on, the case has poor ventilation, it is a really bad case, I real piece of junk.

I will keep in mind the idea of removing the sound card if things continue to go dicey later on...

as far as the memtest running of three hours, if you got no errors after three hours, then i would consider everything is okay in the ram department, the heat buildup would have maximized after the first hour or so.....so unless you are encoding or rendering 24/7, you are fine in the memory arena............

as far as the PS issue, it does sound like the PS is working now, but more than likely it is on the very dicey edge. some non compliant PS's will work with a DFI setup for months, then suddenly the system will start acting up, strange stuffs, hardware redetects, video hiccups, wierd memory like wigouts, cold booting issues, reboot issues, OS install problems and so on, the symtoms can lead you down a lot of roads, only to find out a proper PS would have saved a lot of aingst from the get go.....mind you, most all the suspect PS hardware will work fine with just about any other setup except for DFI......................

Antec has the MB too? how long have they had it? bummer. stomp on them a little harder.....

hopefully things will turn around for you in the employment and cashola departments, having to worry about an absent wife at the same time and looking for better employment has got to grind......

i went totally self employed about 10 years ago (although i had tried several times over the years, just never found my calling early on), it bypasses the corporate BS forever............i am fortunate to have certain skills that are in demand, ironically learned while working for the other side...................

wishing you good luck finding your Nirvana..........

laterz,

baldy

Yeah, I saw that. Naw, I have sworn off Antec for at least the forseeable future, the way they are treating me is terrible. No, not set for RAID, definitely aware of that. I only have 1 of the 250s working now and the 80.

Maybe next month I can get a supply, I just have to hope Antec finally compensates me...

If you are not using RAID, use only your WD HD, especially when loading windows.

Running only 3 hours of memtest is not even close for stability testing purposes.

Even getting no errors in memtest won't mean you are windows stable.

Are you overclocking? What applications are you using to check stability?

Ok, memtest has run for over 9 hours so far with no errors. I also ran 2 instances of Prime (though I didn't yet know about the "custom" option that lets you adjust how the RAM is used) for over an hour.

How long do you recommend running each? And do you recommend using the torture test in two instances?

No, I am not overclocking presently, and probably won't overclock much if at all until I get a stronger supply...

EDIT: OK, day later and I have run memtest86 from bootup, no errors after 12 hours. Now running stress tests of Everest, next I will move on to orthos. So far, after 1.5 hours, all is good and also using web at same time PLUS my distributed projects as well.
