MPSmith Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 I'm at work right now, so I can't get specifics on what my OC was, but it was stable in prime for over 11hrs (both cores) using the test method prescribed here at 2.5GHz. However, it would freeze and eventually cause a BSOD (nv4_disp.dll) after some period of time. In Battlefield 2 it usually wouldnt last long enough to join a game. At stock 1.8GHz games work fine (but I suffer from the weaker clock speed)... What could cause this? I (mistakenly, obviously) thought that if it was stable through prime then it would be ok in games, too.

From my experience there are 2 cures. 1:back the clock down a notch. 2:a tweak on the ram secondary timings. When it happened to me on my NF2, a tweak on ram secondary timings cured it and is much more preferable to lowering the clock. MACarter02 Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 Solution 2 works for me everytime. I got some new Ballistix that I still haven't gotten to 'gaming stable' timings. Orthos ran for 13 hours on blend, and the game still crashes sometimes while "Sending User Information" to a server. Other times it hard locks while playing, etc. Over the period of the last few months, I have tweaked it to where I get the crash/hardlock about once a day. Before with Optimized Defaults on the memory timings, it would craash within an hour of starting the game no matter what. So I will have to continue to tweak the secondary timings, and see what I can get to work 24/7.
HITandRUN Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 Agreed with this! Ram settings are important!
Guest thespin Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 Since games stress the GPU while stability tests usually stress only the CPU and memory, isn't the GPU/GPU driver/GPU temps suspect ? btw: are y'all OCing the GPU ? Games may also stress any sound cards ...

Not in all cases, but most. The O/P is getting BSOD's, which from experience says to me, ram or the clock is just a tad to high. Overclocking the GPU has never caused me a BSOD, although a drop to the desktop has been known when pushing just a bit too much. MPSmith Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 Thanks for the info, guys. I'll post what I had for my timings and then what I change them to for stability. And which timings in particular do you suggest changing? Default with modified CAS, tRCD, etc.? [edit] And the temps stayed exactly the same until the computer rebooted itself. Your main timings should be left alone. What to change as far as secondaries is concerned, is really a matter of trial and error. Especially as you have 4 sticks of ram. You should be looking at Mal, Rp, Tref, Dds and Ddds. It might be all of them, or it could be one of them. Also look in the OCDB to see if anyone else is running the same setup and look at the timmings
MPSmith Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 I checked the OCDB and some had close setups, but no one had the same. Sadly. I'll probably post with timings in an hour or two.
MPSmith Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 Kitfit, that did it, I think. If I was a chick I'd have your baby right now. I didnt play BF2 for a terribly long time, but before it couldnt get passed the server select menu. Thanks!

MPSmith Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 Dds and Ddds. I think the one that did the trick was Ddds, though. Now I can see if I can get it past 2.52GHz...
