Continuous reboot

Last night my internet connection was running slow, so I rebooted. Since then that's all it will do. It just continuously reboots. It will begin to load Windows x64, but at the point Windows should open, it reboots. Ran Memtest 86+ for about an hour with no issues. Moved each memory stick to DIMM 2 and tried alone. Tried each VC (alone) with no change. Diagnostic LED's light up and turn off in proper sequence. All voltages appear normal in CMOS. Did CMOS clear for ~15 mins. No change. I tried to reboot to safe mode, but it still just continues to reboot. I'm running out of ideas. Wondering if this could possibly be a firewall/virus issue. Check the forums, but couldn't find anything I haven't already tried. Any ideas/input/direction is appreciated.

Your PSU might be ready to bite the dust. I recently had this prob, and I know how picky DFI boards are about this kinda thing. I see you have SLI, try to boot with only one card installed, PSU may not be able to supply enough voltage for some odd reason. Hope you fix it!

Thanks for the reply. I did try both cards separately, but no change. I am also leaning towards a PSU going bad.

Did you add any new hardware/software? Does the device manager have any conflicts?

Thanks for the reply. I have not added any software or hardware in the last 4-5 days. I am running Outpost Firewall (only 64 bit I could find) trial that expires in 4 days.?. Device manager did not have any conflicts prior to this issue.

Before this happened, in those 4-5 days, was this the first time you have restarted?

I dont think it would be you PSU, if you can, pop in a XP disk and repair, or if worse, Reformat, id rather spend a few hours then go out and pay $120+ for a dec PSU.

Thanks Darkorb. After thinking about it, I agree. It didn't make sense that it would be the PSU. So last night I did reformat and reinstall. For some reason the OS was seeing two hard drives instead of the RAID array. After a couple hours everything is up and running again. I only lost a couple months of data, but it was worth saving the money for a new PSU. I need to get in the habit of backing up more often. Thanks again for everyone's input.

It occurred to me today that about 3-4 days prior to this "crash", I had defragged. I don't remember rebooting after that. Could the defrag have messed up the RAID array? Just to be safe, I don't plan on defragging again any time soon! (Like with 500 Gb I'll need to )

defragging a raid array is not going to make the problem you described....one must ask, what caused the 'hiccup' in the first place.

if you insist, though, don't eva defrag, then report back in two/three months and tell us how your rig is running.............

BTW, i have had my share of Sata problems, 99% of them can be traced to the data cable and its inherently bad connection, ie, read, fit not tight enough to maintain good contact, the slighest change or wiggle, or just time will eventually have problems surface.........

Well, it happened again!!! At this point I'm leaning towards it being the RAID software (64 bit). So I reformatted AGAIN without the RAID array. I'll see if that solves the problem (it better).

have you changed the Sata cables?, there are much better cables on the market today, built with little plastic bumps on the backside of the insert, helps with 'tightening' the connection.

i can pretty much guarantee your proplems are the Sata connections, i have experienced this before, and new cabling solved the problem...

just a thought, your mileage may vary.

OK. Need some feed-back. I ran Memtest 86+ for 12 straight hours with out a single issue, swapped the PSU, put new SATA cables in (baldy :) ), and still got the continuous reboot. I dumped the RAID array , reinstalled XP Pro 32 bit , and have had no issues restarting for ~4-5 days now. However, when I first reinstalled 32 bit, I seemed to have issues with the most recent drivers for my VC's and had to boot in safe mode and rollback the driver to an earlier one to get up and running. I have since updated the drivers to the latest ones without any issues so far. Do you guys think this could be the cause of the continuous reboot with 64 bit XP (driver conflict)?

Note: The drivers are the same version for both 64 bit and 32 bit.
