Splave Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 My question is, I have parts for 3 comps comming in tommorow. I was wondering If I can install windows on a new Hard drives(just windows, no drivers) using my current computer and then swap the harddrive to the new parts (motherboard, CPU) and then install the chipset drivers etc for that board when the parts come? Windows installation isnt board specific right? Its only after you install the mobo drivers so there should be a problem? 27floyd Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 It is specific. I have done it in the past but both were nforce2 chipsets. I dont think you can do it if the chipsets are different?
dr_bowtie Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 yes it is board specific....more so chipset specific...windows loads generic drivers for the chipset the drive is attached to...
SAGIT Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 You might try what's below though even if it's relating to motherboards. To me, it's the same "wrong MS _business". The idea is to "neutralize" the IDE channel. You might do the same for the audio & video. But be sure to do so before unpluging the HD. You boot in SafeMode and Windoz should start recognizing what ever stuff you have to present "to the king" TweakXP.com Before you swap out the current motherboard go to device manager and select the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller and select your current storage controller. Right click, select update driver and select install from a list or specific location. Click don't search I will choose the driver to install and select the standard dual channel IDE controller. This will prevent the inaccessible boot device blue screen. With this method, booting the first time with the new motherboard should be done in Safe mode. XP will install the drivers it needs and you can install the new motherboard drivers. I would suggest accessing the motherboard web site to get the latest drivers and bios updates rather than use the CD media included with the MB. The CD is usually a couple of revisions behind the latest updates.

ReelFiles Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 It's not worth it if you just have to wait a day, just asking for trouble, IMO. Patience grasshopper
dr_bowtie Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 I have had good luck with installing the generic dual channel IDE controller when going from different Nforce chipsets (sometimes) but never from AMD to Intel or anything like that... I have never had to do anything when going from different Via chipsets...I just switch and go.... I am going to try again here real soon going from NF4 to NF550 to see if it will work... from my point of view I would just load windows on it's own box as you go.. except for formating the drive...loading XP to the Biostar 550/4000+ Brisbane took 5 minutes....just formatting took 20 minutes
