red930 Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Please read before saying "Opteron" right off the bat. I know this is a common and probably stupid question, but what would be the best way to put a few more years' worth of life into a 939 system? Newegg right now has the X2 3800 (Toledo) OEM for $96. My other option is to go to Fry's to handpick a stepping. I will be overclocking whatever I get. However, since I'm still in school, the computer will be used mainly for schoolwork (gaming on weekends/holidays). I can get the Opteron for twice as much as the X2, around $185. Given the X2 Toledo's track record in the field of overclocking and the lack of results for it, should there be anything I have to be worried about? I'd like a high overclock for my epenis, but having 2.6 is fine by me, since this machine won't see constant, heavy use. Any heavy use will come from gaming/occasional video encoding/some Photoshopping. What would be the best thing to do in you guys' opinions? I'm swaying to the Opteron for, like I said, my epenis, and also the joy of overclocking, but having the X2 for half the cost is making me reconsider my decision. Thanks for all your help. Voltes-5 Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Are you at the checkout yet, I know an Opty is good but for that price on the X2? Its a steal.
Splave Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 you should def get 2.6ghz out of it unless its a realllll dud
Voltes-5 Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 From what I have been reading about the latest of them X2's, they are a great OC'er.
red930 Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 From what I have been reading about the latest of them X2's, they are a great OC'er. Yes, but I've been noticing more consistent overclocks with real Manchester cores... most of the Toledo X2 3800's I've seen are CCBWE, and we all know that story. But, since these are OEM and presumably new, they might carry one of those weird new ones. So I'm skeptical. I'll probably wait until 2:30 tomorrow to jump on anything. My epenis wants to grow! Heh. Coors Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 even with a ccbwe you should be able to hit 2.7ghz
red930 Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 even with a ccbwe you should be able to hit 2.7ghz Keep persuading me, guys... I could use a new MP3 player to while I'm at it, lol.
Voltes-5 Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 even with a ccbwe you should be able to hit 2.7ghz Yeah, the crappiest I have seen is that 2.7 with a high vcore, like the one I have, had, which I gave to my niece but its good and dandy. But I get his point, we all want a better one to play with, he he he LOL, I know I did.

I couldn't get there with my 3700 that I'm using now... lol Get the X2 then? Pondering...
Voltes-5 Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Yeah, too bad man, the best upgrade right now is a c2d, I had to upgrade to newer ram just to get it and it was not cheap. I even got a couple of 8800gts then one of them died and XFX was out of them GTS so they gave me a GTX. My c2d kicks my Opty's behind no matter what. General Septem Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 If you can get a dual-core for under a hundred dollars, jump on it. You'll get maybe 2.6 GHz OC as opposed to possibly 3 GHz if you're lucky (and it's possible you won't be any better off than with the X2 anyway). Unless you want to be a real OG (Overclocking Geek :tooth: ) it's really not worth it for the small performance gain.
