Thraxz and his Graduate School (mis)adventures.

Recommended Posts

Well, I've been accepted to the Ph.D. program in Biology at UMass - Boston today.

I'm kind of at a loss for words but still want to tell the world that I've succeeded.

Dear Scott:

Congratulations! It is my pleasure to inform you that you have been accepted to the Ph.D. Program in Biology. The goals of our Ph.D. program are two-fold: To provide you with the necessary knowledge and research skills to function as an independent investigator in your given field, and to afford you with supervised teaching experience to function as a valued colleague at an academic institution. An official letter of acceptance from the Office of Graduate Studies should arrive in the next couple of weeks. Please telephone or e-mail me as soon as possible with your decision whether you will accept our offer. I will be happy to answer any question that you have for making your decision.

Dr. ****** will be acting as your faculty advisor. Your advisor is the person with whom you will be designing your course of study and your research plans. You should contact her to discuss research plans and information about registering for coursework.

Your assistantship stipend is a full assistantship, involving a work obligation as a teaching assistant to the department of ** hours per week during the academic year. Your award as presently configured consists of $*****. Your assistantship also involves a full tuition remission and some additional financial benefits. This offer also includes an Education Operations fee waiver. There are, however, other student fees, which you will have to pay. You can go to the university website for further details.

While the commitment embodied in this offer is for academic year '06-'07 only, the Biology program normally provides support for its Ph.D. graduate students for 5 years. Barring unforeseen circumstances, and assuming that you continue to make satisfactory academic progress, you should be able to expect a similar level of support during that timeframe. Additional supplementation after 5 years could be provided by your faculty mentor from any external grants.

If you are also planning on applying for financial aid, please understand that your stipend is considered income, must be reported on your federal financial aid form, and will be considered in determining your financial aid allocation.

Once again, congratulations and thank you for your interest in our program. I hope to hear (on a positive note!) from you soon.

Best wishes,

Gregory [last name edited out]
