they had this all alone they just didn't tell you,.. law enforcement has been tracking cellular phones for decades. now it's becoming more popular with the general public. FYI all GPS enabled phones can be tracked. I liked the days were a long string on a can was good enough.

LOL good trick; scary thing is that cell phones can actually be tracked.

Yeah like those phones Disney advertises for parents that want to track their kids. Makes me glad I bought my own phone and my parents are computer/ anything electronic illiterate.

No Kidding

Anything with a GPS receiver can be tracked. Even conventional cell phones can be tracked by triangulation based on signal strength between 3 cell towers and the phone.

Didn't I see that on CSI?

I work in the industry. Without GPS, it is possible, but it take multiple sites to do anywhere close to accurately. Oh, and it usually requires the wireless operators assistance, but newer tech is making that easier.

We have done lots of requests to find missing people, and every good result makes it worthwhile.

Possibilities for abuse do exist and most carriers are very aware of the implications of that and will have plenty of safeguards to make sure your privacy is not violated without a good reason...i.e. a court order.

rotflmao XD

They really need to redesign the whole thing, though, so that it's impossible to track the phones even with a court order. That's one of the reasons I don't have OnStar or any other GPS, or a cell phone for that matter although I do want one.

I don't know about cell phones, but it should be possible to have a GPS-type system without having to tell the satellite where you are.

Anything that uses wireless signals can be tracked if either by triangulation or by signal strength & direction from a known location. That's the whole principle behind GPS; based upon the distance (i.e. signal strength) to 3 satellites it can triangulate the position of the receiver. The same applies to cell phones; even so they use the closest tower for communication it can still be "seen" by the other nearby towers and thus tracked; how else would they be able to route a call to your phone if it couldn't be tracked.

While technology can make it easier for people; it can also make it easier for the government to monitor the people. Not to mention companies putting back doors into their products; so that they, or government officials, can always have access.
