Problems with slowness and system halting

Recommended Posts

Hello I was wondering if anyone can help please;

My system keeps freezing, it happens when;

1) After about 10-15 mins of it being booted up, whilst not doing anything game related

2) Sometimes in the middle of playing a game

It doesn’t turn off it just freezes and u can’t do nothing on it. After it has done it once sometimes twice it works fine for the rest of the time im on it, until the next time I turn it on say the next day. Any suggestions of anything I can try.

Someone has said that my PSU needs upgrading to stop the freezes, can anyone confirm this.

I am also unsure how to setup my BIOS correctly for my system setup, especially CAS Latency settings as i have read this is extremely important on DFI motherboards.

Any help would be much appreciated as its doing my head in lol

I would suggest you read through this setup guide written by OCZ Tony (I think) as many times as your eyes will take, then manually set your memory timings using your newfound knowledge.

http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20506

Let us know how that works. If it doesn't help, there are 3 bios' other than the 04/26, which I'm guessing is what came on the board. Anyway, the 5/23 works well for me, and the 7/xx? has been popular as well. Before flashing, and after trying to set timings manually...Post your manual settings, it is real easy to get one thing like Max Async Latency, among others set wrong and not be able to pinpoint the problem. We could definately help with that if it's the issue.

Short of writing a book to list all of the possible hangups,:rolleyes: I will suggest you check your system error logs for m5288 errors, or anything hard drive related that happen the same time your system freezes.

Oh yeah, a better power supply could quite possibly be your remedy. Could save a LOT of time and is just a good idea to get a better one.

Good luck man, let us know how you are doing.

Usually there's no short cut here. I tend to believe that your success in having a fairly working system has to do with the fact that you're running it with a single module of RAM. Two modules in dual channel will very seldom work without setting proper timings and voltage. So hopefully you'll solve this by reading up a bit and find out recommended timings for you RAM.

I wouldn't be inclined to say it's the PSU if it's just freezing... If it was restarting, or randomly powering down, that's another story... Like they said, check your Memory timings and read up on your hardware... there's a LOT of info here at the street, and the search function works pretty well...

DON'T UPGRADE YOUR PSU ... or, at least, I don't think it will fix this problem in particular. (OR maybe we both need to upgrade our PSU, lol)

My friend, I believe I am experiencing the exact same problem, from the way you are describing it. I will attempt to describe it further and we can compare notes:

a. I too get just a freeze. No reboot, BSOD, or powerdown. Whatever is on the screen at the time simply halts.

b. This also happens about 5-15 mins after powering up.

c. Whether I'm playing SupCom or just browsing the web, it still happens within the expected timeframe.

d. (for what it's worth) When it freezes, the HDD light is always solid.

e. I am running Ubuntu Edgy Eft on one hard drive and Vista on another. I only connect one HD at a time. This freezing problem manifests itself in the exact same way on both OS's.

Now, I've been using the same hardware before getting this board (PSU included) and only started getting this problem when I installed the CFX mobo.

I've come up with a rudimentary solution, see if it works for you:

I've noticed that I only get this freezing problem from the initial powerup (i.e. turning it on with the power button after a shut down). When I reset the PC (either before or after it freezes) using the reset button, the freezing problem is gone! Its the weirdest thing but I've been doing it long enough to say it works.

Admittedly, I haven't changed any RAM timings and just left them at defaults, I do have the latest BIOS though. Maybe it is our RAM timings, but that wouldn't explain how the problem disappears after reboot. It sounds, if anything other than the mobo, like a PSU problem. But then surely my PSU is good enough as it was recommended for this board.

Let me know if this helps at all.

Besides the psu you need to read up on uli errors controller problem with this motherboard fix for this is use windows drivers for the controller...... (ali drivers). This link plus many more http://www.diy-street.com/forum/showthread...ight=uli+errors

This uli error doesn't happen to all cfx 3200 but it happens a lot. Solve mine by installing promise controller card but not an option for everyone as they are 100 bucks but again use the ali windows drivers for the uli controller. Problem solved
