3 Sata drives, mobo going crazy.

Recommended Posts

I recently bought a 3rd HDD (segate 320gig) for having as a Linux drive.

I also at the same time removed the crappy sata power cables that came with my OCZ powersupply with genric ones that actually stay inplace.

For some reason the mobo refuses to see all 3 drives at once.

It sees the new segate and one of the old maxtors but not all of them togather.

Yet it can pick them up indiviauly and in groups of two.

Now I know what your thinking, must be a weak PSU. Well I did the following tests.

Unplugged everything but the essential mobo requirements... no good

Gave all HDD with power but only 2 with sata cable, bam works!

All 3 powered, only 2 connect and they work, all combos.

After this, the mobo went a bit retarted refused to see any HDD, so after a power down and swap all cables back im running the machine with a single drive.

What the hell is going on?

Is the new drive SATAII (300Mbps)? if so; make sure it's connected to a SATAII port or set the jumper to SATA (150Mbps) mode for use on a SATA port.

The old drives are 150 and the new one is 300.

How do you set the jumpers for 150?

I never thought sata drives needed jumer settings.

Most SATAII drives have a jumper on the back to slow them down to SATA interface speeds to be backwards compatible with Mbs that only have SATA ports.

Remove jumper for 300 action......leave jumper for 150....for seagate drives.

Gave it a go guys, set the jumper to limit the segate 300 drive to 150.

Still a no go, bios just doesnt want to see them all working togather.

If you can think of anything else, please post it.

While I wait im going to try a bios flash.

Its been such a long time since a flash I have forgotten what they all mean.

Any way thanks for the help.
