The Memory Jungle!

Recommended Posts

Oh, what a jungle this is!

I was up-to-date on overclocking for the 939 boards, but now i am just lost. I've tried studying up on the OC but it seems everywhere i read people tell me differently. I've got a brand new rig all ready for purchasing, all i need is to pick the memory. This will be my rig sofar:

GigaByte GA-965P-DS3

Intel Core Duo E4300 (ofcourse this will receive a decent boost by OC)

Noctua cooler for the processor

8800GTS 320MB

Corsair HX520W PSU

And i guess that's what matters when it comes down to RAM..

But which darned RAM to pick? Should i aim for running the ram+processor synced? PC6400? PC8000? Ack, this is what troubles me! :D

If anyone have any tips or ideas on which RAM to pick for my "not crazily but still rather nicely overclocked gaming rig" rig, then I would love any feedback.

Thank you all in advance, Pelle from sweden.

EDIT: Do the E4300's still overclock as nicely as the first examples did? I guess nobody can give me a 100% certain answer but..

When I asked this question going from socket 939 using TCCD 80% of people told me anything with Micron D9 chips.

I started off with the cheapest PQI 2 x 512MB PC6400 I could find just to get me going & to give me an emergency set later on.

Actually the budget PQI ram let me get 3.8GHZ out of my E6600 so it wasn't that bad at all.

I now have 2 x 1GB Buffalo Firestix with the Micron D9GMH chips on & I think especially for the money they rock.

http://buffalotech.com/products/memory/fir.../firestix-dimm/

I can run my E6600 @ 3.6GHZ using the 533 divider/strap 1:1 800mhz RAM speed 4.4.4.12 on 1.9v (stock is 2.1v) I can also run 1000MHZ 4.4.4.12 with 2.4v or even 1060mhz (thats as fast as I need them) @ 5.5.5.15 on stock 2.1v.

From my experiences with this RAM I would say the Micron D9 chips are the TCCD of the DDR2 world.

I paid extra for my RAM kit from ebay because the guy had them in stock & I didn't want to wait 2-4 weeks from Buffalo see link below. Also in the UK we only get a 2 year warranty where the USA get lifetime. I am very happy with my RAM kit & it still worked out £50 cheaper bringing them in rather than getting them in the UK.

I was just told that those memories would be overkill for my system, im just gonna do a healthy overclock and not any extreme stuff. I was told to get the cheapest 6400 memories, cause all i would need was memories that could run @ 822mhz.. Now im not after a big 3dmarks score, im after FPS in games. I dont give a crap about scores.

So, should i go for some OCZ Platinum DDR2 PC6400 2048MB KIT which are about as cheap as 6400 comes for me in sweden, or buy from ebay? the ebay modules really arn't more expensive i guess, but it's always nice to buy from sweden in case of warranty issues.

I think any PC6400 will do 822mhz & yes the Micron D9 stuff is overkill for what you want but for a 2GB kit which will help in gaming over a 1GB kit at that price you would be better off buying the overkill stuff.

I dident hear good things about that OCZ ram so I ruled it out.

Have you had a look to see how much the cheapest 2GB kit is compared to the Firestix I think you will be surprised I was.

Its always nice to buy localy but usualy I strive to get everything at rock bottom price which rules out the UK & any local service I might have got.

They sell silicone over here with stockings over there head just so you really know you are being mugged :)

I am now starting to hear good things about the OCZ RAM in the link below also the price is very good too.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16820227159

The nice thing about OCZ is they have really good support & the lifetime warranty although I still think the XTC heatspreaders look & feel like toys rather than the nice heavy quality feel of there older RAM.

I can also do 1100mhz 5.5.5.15 no problem with my Firestix just for comparison.
