Lackadaisical Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Looking for some advice on my settings. I'm having alot of problems getting through orthos but I can run through 3dmark easily. The thing that is really bothering me is that orthos is crashing damn near instantly, so I have no idea why I can even pass 3dmark at all  The ram is stable @ 260mhz with those settings. I'm just wondering if theres something else that could be holding me back while trying to go higher, or if my processor has reached its limit, which is very possible. These are the settings I'm trying to get stable. FSB Bus Frequency - 295 LDT/FSB Frequency Ration - 3 CPU/FSB Frequency Ratio - 10 PCI eXpress Frequency - 100Mhz CPU VID StartUp Value - StartUp CPU VID Control - 1.525v CPU VID Special Control - Avove VID * 104% LDT Voltage Control - 1.30v Chip Set Voltage Control - 1.60v DRAM Voltage Control - 2.5 DRAM Enable +.03v DRAM Configuration Settings: DRAM Frequency Set - 166 (DRAM/FSB:1/01) Command Per Clock (CPC) - Enable CAS Latency Control (Tcl) - 3.0 RAS# to CAS# delay (Trcd) - 04 Bus Clocks Min RAS# active time (Tras) - 08 Bus Clocks Row precharge time (Trp) - 4 Bus Clocks Row Cycle time (Trc) - 07 Bus Clocks Row refresh cyc time (Trfc) - 14 Bus Clocks Row to Row delay (Trrd) - 02 Bus Clocks Write recovery time (Twr) - 02 Bus Clocks Write to Read delay (Twtr) - 02 Bus Clocks Read to Write delay (Trwt) - 03 Bus Clocks Refresh Period (Tref) - 3684 Cycles Write CAS Latency (Twcl) - 1 DRAM Bank Interleave - Enabled DQS Skew Control - Auto DQS Skew Value - 0 DRAM Drive Strength - Level 7 DRAM Data Drive Strength - Level 3 Max Async Latency - 8.0 Read Preamble Time - 6.0 IdleCycle Limit - 256 Cycles Dynamic Counter - Disable R/W Queue Bypass - 16 x Bypass Max - 07 x 32 Byte Granularity - Disable(8 Bursts)
THEnumber337 Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 If you can't pass Orthos your rig is not stable. Check the OCDB and check for settings with specs that are similar to your's. What stepping is your Opteron 170? Bump up your DRAM voltage to 2.7. Bump up your Trc to about 12. That's some high voltage to be pumping through that Opty. What are your temps like? Lackadaisical Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 sorry I thought the stepping was in my sig. I havent redone it in a while. stepping is CCBBE 0615EPMW Temps are good as I'm on watercooling now. Temps are under 50@ load. Dram voltage does not help. My ram actually doesnt seem to like extra voltage for some reason, it seems to do better with less.
PhoetuS Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 My HZs are the same way, they like less voltage, not more. You & I have very similar rigs except for motherboard & our settings are very similar as well. As for ram timings the only difference is: RP = 5.5 DRAM DDS = 2 DRAM volt = 2.55 Also my LDT volt is 1.2 & Chipset is 1.52. I am wondering if maybe the ram isn't happy... What happens if you bump your ram volts up a touch: 2.55-2.6? I know mine seem to be fine between 2.55 & 2.6, but they don't like lower then 2.55. 280x10 is stable @ 1.475, What kind of volts does it take to get 290x10 stable? Guest LookBackX2 Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Hi. We have the same stepping opty. I just noticed that your tref is different than mine. Otherwise most of the settings are real similar. Try 4708 tref, it was suggested to me for a more stable OC, and it worked. Lackadaisical Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 I tried 2.6v on the ram, no dice. Maybe I should consider picking a new bios to test. Mine is quite dated. 2.7ghz @ 1.375v 2.8 @ 1.475 2.9 @ 1.55 Really seems like I'm just reaching the limit. My cpu just seems like it would need ALOT of voltage to get any higher and I'm just not comfortable with that. Ofcourse I'm happy at 2.8ghz but I just wanted to try for that little more. It boots @ 3ghz so I was thinking I could make it, but I dont see that happening now. I do find it odd that I can pass 3dmark but cant even run orthos for a full minute. Normally I would always freeze up in 3dmark if it was that unstable. Thats why I wondering if my settings looked off.
PhoetuS Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 2.7ghz @ 1.375v2.8 @ 1.475 2.9 @ 1.55 Yep, it is scaling like you have reached the CPUs limit. A new bios is probably worth a try, but probably won't make a huge difference.

wizurd of awwz Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 I, too, have the same stepping. I'm running 290x10 @ 1.45vcore and 15 hours Prime stable. I think your voltage is way too high for 2950. In all honestly I would start over and loosen your RAM timings. Slapping some timings and voltages together and praying it works is a horrible idea. wizurd of awwz Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Also, update your BIOS to the 704-2bta.
Guest LookBackX2 Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 What are you running your opteron at? Right now I am at 2910 w/1.45vcore

Just because your opteron overclocks better then mine it does not mean I just slapped some timings and voltages together. You really have no idea if you think thats what I did....
