Is it my ram? Can't get correct CPUz results

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am almost there on my OC project but I have encountered a snag. I apologize in advance for the super long post:eek:

I recently tested my ram and it passed all night on memtest86 @ 450 with 4-4-4-12 1t. Also passed memtest#5 without errors. Now my CPU maxed out (at the voltage I am comfortable with) at 2706 @ 246 htt x11 multi. When I tried to match the ram and cpu up at 246 x11, ram at ddr800 with the same timings = no boot. When I changed the timings to 5-6-6-15 2t, it boots fine but when I get into windows and load CPUz it shows my core speed at defaults (2200 mhz and 200 x11) with my ram at the correct timings running at 366.7Mhz

According to the tables I found, the ram is running at defaults but according to what I have the bios set at, I should be showing 2706 Mhz, 246 htt, x11 multi, with my ram at 451Mhz (2706/6 = 451 (6 being the divider for 800 at x11).

I have tried increasing and decreasing my HTT multiplier to x3, x4, x5 and auto as well as manually setting the c51/mcp55 freq (246), multi (match htt) and width (16up and 16down - matching HTT width). I am not 100% sure what these settings do but I figured I would change them a bit to test. From what I understand though, they shouldnt have much impact on what I am doing so long as the HTT multi is within range for my setup.

So where am I going wrong here? I was stable and having no problems at 2706 246 x11 with a divider 333 and timings 4-4-4-12 1t but that is causing my ram to run at 386 and I was hoping to at least get 400 out of it.

The thing is, while checking the DDR2 divider tables I realized that at my top OC of 2700, no matter what fsb/multi config I choose, I am either using a 6 or 7 divider and subsequently will be either around 450 or 380 for my dram freq.

Now if I went up to 2800 it looks like I could run ram at 400 but I am not sure if I want to keep increasing the voltage to get to 2800 (at 1.42 right now) because my heat is about 52-53 at load (one core).

So is it my ram that is causing CPUz to show default settings (some sort of override in the bios?) even though it tested ok at the same Mhz? Do I need to settle for 386Mhz or am I just missing something?

If you read all that, thanks a lot. Hope you all can give me some tips...

Well this is kind of a bump but...

I benchmarked the stable system (246 @ 11X, ram on a divider 333 - 386mhz) and I am getting: 6162 3dmark05, 3425 3dmark06, 88937 aquamark.

Is this about what I should expect from my settings and a 7600GT?

Would I see any major performance gain if I were able to get it stable with my ram on DDR2400 @ 451Mhz?

How much performance gain could I get with a little video card OC'ing?

4400+ at 2.7, with one 7600gt stock around 3500 3dmarks 06, overclocked gpu around 4000 3dmarks. never had much gain in frames because of the memory, but my memory is limiting a bit in my overclocking.but you heve 2*512kb cache, which reduces a bit the graphic scores.

Thanks for the reply BG - what have you gotten the 4400+ stable at? I thought the 4400+ was 512x2 L2 but a quick check to newegg advised me that the Toledo is 1Mb which is what I am assuming you have (Brisbane is 512x2)

How far did you push a single 7600gt? You hardvolt it or are you using a bios mod or rivatuner/some other software? I am thinking about using rivatuner on mine but I am new to overclocking the vid card too so I am thinking rivatuner but wasnt sure what sort of perf gain I could get out of it...

What kind of ram is that kingston? I might try tightening up my timings around what you have if the ram and your overclock is similar...

well its difficult to overclock it very high like id like to. 2.6ghz at 1.39. it i go over that im doing 1.488v on the cpu for 2.7ghz, im running at 2.7ghz now. i can hit higher than that but temps go over 60c and i not into cpu bunring experiences

my 7600gt was single at 631/835. which was exactly 4156 if i remember right.

now sli im at 6500 3dmarks :)

rivatuner used for vga tweaking, it the best i found for the 7600gt"s

my ram is Kingston value ram rated at 3-3-3-8 1t, it overclocks a bit thought with high voltages, but still thats whats limiting me.

Yeah Im betting I could get mine higher as well but I dont want to go over 1.42v - I too, am opposed to the art of CPU burning :) Maybe once i get a bit less noobly Ill try for 2.8... I just thought too, I cant get similar timings to your ram cuz im on ddr2 - higher latency due to the dubba-doubling.

So rivatuner actuall let you get like 600 more points in 3dmark huh? Remind me the 631 is your core clock and the 835 is what?

Im thinking about SLi but now I think ill just wait for a DX10 card in my price range...

631 is the core (engine)

835 is the memory (gddr3 x 2= 1670mhz effective)
