PCP&C Silencer 750W VS. OCZ GameXStream 850W?

Recommended Posts

I need a new power supply and am torn between the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W and the OCZ GameXStream 850w. THe OCZ is $15.00 more which is not a factor to me.

I like the 60A on the +12v rail of the PCP&C, and was wondering how that compares to OCZ multi-rail 12v (+12V1(18A), +12V2(18A), +12V3(18A), +12V4(18A)...

The OCZ also has a little more juice on the +3.3V @36A vs. PCP&C's +3.3V @24A. Does it make a difference?

You guys have tested and like both brands, but since prices are so close, which should I choose? Don't worry, I won't blame ya if they don't work well...

Please note that in addition to the parts in my Signature, I'll be adding a second Radeon X1900GT card for Crossfire, and 2GB Kit OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 ATI CrossFire Dual Channel Memory (OCZ2A8002GK). Planning to continue Overclocking as well.

I really appreciate any help, criticism, or advice,

Thanks,

My first GXS died in a week. My second, on TWO gigabyte DS3s, has a 24 pin connector that if I move it, the board turns off. It did this with the gigabyte, but not with an asus or DFI. The unit I got back from RMA also had a few nice nicks on it. Other PSUs do not exhibit that issue on the DS3.

The OCZ also isn't quiet either compared to a real quiet PSU.. silentpcreview has a thread mentioning how its fan controller is compared to the FSP units of equal power. I can't speak for the PCP&P silencer, but it's got to be at least the same amount of noise if not less.. just from the amount of noise I heard on the two GXS units I had.

Get the PCP&P - less problems.

I'm sure another 9000 people will chime in saying they have had no issues, etc, and that is why I give my opinion - because a bunch of other people will say they have not had problems. It's helpful to hear both sides IMO, even with one side coming from an assclown such as myself. :)

"Pretty sure the Silencer line is by Seasonic, Turbo-Cool might be in house but who knows."

Does it matter?

No mention on PC Power & Cooling website or unit specs - how can you tell?

-BB

Not to me, they're still built by PC Power & Cooling specs. The Turbo-Cool line is just held to a slightly higher standard than the Silencer line is all.

I've had excellent, excellent luck with my 510 ASL and will certainly get another PC Power & Cooling PSU should I ever need one.

As for how you can tell...well I recall seeing a list somewhere about where power supplies come from but you'd have to Google it a bit to find it.

Yea, I was looking at Outpost too, and I saw they were out of stock. So I went to a local Fry's Electronics (partners with Outpost) and the rep. told me that model was out of stock because it has been discontinued. The reason is that the Silencer 750w model they carried was the 2 PCExpressx16 version. The new (current model) has 4 PCExpressx16 connectors, but they don't have it in stock yet - nor is there a price for it.

They do have the OCZ 850W in stock for $174.99 + $25 rebate, and a Seasonic M12 700W Modular Power Supply that is suppose to be good too for $189.99 + $20 rebate. My first choice is the PC&P 750W, but I may just pick up the Seasonic or OCZ because Fry's has them in stock (5 minutes from home) so I can try it out, and in case I don't like it, I can just return it without having to deal with shipping and all that.

Thanks for all the input,
