nice_shoes Posted February 17, 2007 Posted February 17, 2007 My wife surprised me the other day and said that she wants me to get her a notebook computer. She had never really shown any interest before and so her request surprised me. She said that she wants to use it to surf the internet, and she wants to be able to sit in her favorite chair while she is using it. So, I think that I need to buy a very basic notebook with: [1] a good 15.4" screen [2] battery life of at least 3 hours [3] wireless capability. I do not know much about wireless, my computer is a desktop that is connected to a cable modem. If I get her this new wireless notebook, will I have to go wireless on my desktop also, or can I get a wireless router that will allow me to attach to it with the wire and still allow her to connect wirelessly?? Is some wireless better than others? I need advice and suggestions. thanks in advance!
radodrill Posted February 17, 2007 Posted February 17, 2007 The best would be to get a wireless router; does not require you to leave your PC on just so the laptop can connect to the internet. The mainstream wireless standards are 802.11b and 802.11g (commonly referred to as wireless b and g; throughput rates of 11 mbps and 54 mbps respectively). Most current laptops have wireless adapters built in that will work with either the b or g standard. I'd recommend buying a wireless G router for your purposes. Most wireless routers also have an internal 4-port wired switch; so you'd connect the router to the cable-modem and the desktop to the router. Buy yourself a Linksys WRT54G and be done with it.
radodrill Posted February 18, 2007 Posted February 18, 2007 D-Link also makes good routers; I'm currently using a D-Link DI-624.
