User983 Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 (Please see sig for specs). I have a WD Raptor. There are two odd things that happen to my hard drive when using Windows XP Pro x64 (SP2 v.2825). If I click properties for a large file (say, ~300MB), the hard drive starts loading like crazy, doesn't do anything else for like 20-30 seconds, then finally displays the simple properties page for the file after all of that loading. Secondly, there have been a few times where the hdd demonstrated even more strange behavior. I was loading an mp3 from a playlist that was on an external drive, and not the Raptor... when I clicked play in Winamp, the application didn't respond and the Raptor instantly started loading and would not stop. It just kept going and going. I eventually had to press the reset button because it wouldn't stop, Windows would not respond. This was the only time something like this happened. It happened once before with ITE Monitor (well, it brought my system to a crawl but didn't lock it up), but I figured that's because it was trying to detect values (-12v -5v) that apparently the board does not properly monitor. It's not in RAID so the IDE controller is handling it, and according to the manual this is normal. However, should I reinstall Windows with BIOS configured to recognize the drive with the SATA RAID controller instead? I would normally place the fault on the drive, but the last machine that this drive was in never did anything like this and I just built this rig a few days ago. One other problem I'm having is that, I'd say one out of every ten boots or so, after the POST screen, it does nothing. I get a blinking cursor for a couple seconds, then it goes away and it's a blank screen. I was thinking it could be inadequate power, but if that was the case I'd likely be getting blue screens and random reboots in XP. Not to mention I already made a thread about that and people assured me that my PSU was more than likely fine. Also, I've done some things that use a lot of cpu cycles and just a lot power, and it has not locked up... so I can't see how trying to load an mp3 from Winamp while having nothing else open at the time is draining too much power. Thanks in advance...
noneed4me2 Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 I had some issues running XP 64bit but it did run. I had some software incompatabilites and occasional lockups even with all the correct 64bit drivers installed. I also had restarts on stock settings with 3 different PSUs and they went away when I got an Antec Smartpower 2.0 500w. Sometimes they would return at higher clocks until I upped my vcore and then they would go away again. Looking at your 350w supply I would say get something higher. The one I got is modular and pretty cheap on Newegg.
User983 Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 Well keep in mind I'm not getting "restarts" - I have to manually restart with the reset button, because after it posts and either before/after the SATA bios screen comes up is when it may decide to just do nothing but give me a cursor that disappears, then the screen is completely blank and the keyboard doesn't even respond. I'm worried that maybe something else more serious is wrong... if it's locking up before loading Windows due to power, then why am I totally stable in Windows? I installed x86 XP today, and the problems I had in x64 Windows seem to be gone (for example, clicking on the properties for a large file comes up instantly now -- of course I also switched from the IDE controller to the RAID controller, but the manual seems to imply that either one does not matter if you're not using SATA *RAID*.) 64-bit just isn't worth it if it's that buggy and incompatible with stuff, imo. If this is my PSU I just hope I'm not damaging anything -- can't really afford to get a more expensive one right now. If it's not the PSU then it has to be the board, which is obviously the last thing I need.
User983 Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 I reflashed the bios, and since then the rebooting problems have also gone away. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Hopefully it just had a bad flash coming out of the factory.
noneed4me2 Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 I forgot that i to flashed my bios to the most recent and certain other issues like lockups went away, but I am also running a dual core Opteron so that might have played some part in my problems on the older bios. As long as you stay with integrated video and sound the power draw is minimal and the 350w should be fine, but when you decide to upgrade later I would definately start with your PSU, good luck. User983 Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 Thanks. Still haven't encountered any boot problems. I figure I'm drawing: Mobo - 25W (?) Floppy - 5W KBM - 4W CPU - 67W CPU Fan - 3W RAM - 20W HDD - 25W PCI Card - 4W Two optical drives - 50W Two external USB devices (hard drive, memory stick) 10W So that's 213W right there. Should be enough for what I have now. I probably won't get a card for a while. And when I do I may just get something midrange that doesn't even drain that much power.
