calvintang Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 I had a headset by altec lansing, now that i had cut both mic and sound wires to remove the crappy volume dial, how do i reattach the wires back? twisting it together didn't work. Solder it?
red930 Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 well soldering it would be the best way. But there two types of wires being used. #1 speaker type wire. #2 real fine wire plastic coated tread like with fiber in it. #1=easy #2 hard but can be done best way is to take a liter and lightly burn the fiber away then very careful use a razor blade and remove the remaining color plastic away and then with some flux can be solder back together
radodrill Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 You should most definitely solder them back together. If twisting the wires didn't work; then they're most probably treated so that current won't flow between them. The best way to solder them is to get a small blob of flux on the end of the wire; then use a 25/30W iron to heat up the end; after about 10-20s start slowly adding solder (may take a few secs before the solder starts to hold) until the first 3mm are tinned. Then you can easily solder 2 tinned ends together. Don't forget to heatshrink each wire and also put some heatshrink around that point in the cable to add some strength to it. calvintang Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 thanks for the replies, will try that!
Guest Pyro Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 The real fine fiber sucks. I had a logitech USB premium headset and the mic went out tried to fix it but only to find I could never get the wires back together. Hopefully you can get it though I really didn't have the patience. Any your right twisting them is not going to work. Just be careful and take your time you should be able to get the working again. If it's the green, red, and copper colored wires w/o a plastic insulator around each then the only way to solder it is with the flux method I mentioned earlier; because the wire is treated so it doesn't conduct to wires that are touching it (that's why twisting doesn't work). If they have an insulating jacket around each wire then it's easy as pie.
Guest Pyro Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 Yeah my problem was the mic part didn't have any protective shielding in the mic part itself. They were very thin cables going into kinda sucked. But in this case this "should" be a very easy fix if you have the right tools to do the job correct and to make it last. If you get it back together I'd be careful with the whole tugging thing with very thin cables id be worried. What model headphones are they any ways?
