Saionjik Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 Hey guys, I've just bought myself a 250 gig WD Sata 3.0 drive and I've never ran a sata drive before. I have two IDE drives attached with a IDE ribbon cable with primary master and primary secondary. I connected my sata drive with the sata coord I got with the motherboard and I used the power adapter from molex to sata power and connected it. I boot my comp and go into bios and see it's not detected, I then boot windows and check if it'll detect. Nothing. Is this drive DOA or am I doing something wrong? I dont know =/ I want to use this drive as my new C: drive with a new windows install and my old windows C: drive will be my secondary, and my old secondary will just be backup . old_geekster Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 My suggestion is to unplug your IDE drives from the system, since you want to install the OS on this drive. This will do two things: !. It will assure that Windows sets it up as C: and 2. Eliminate the possibiltity of confiicts. I have done this and it worked for me. Also, assure that your SATA is Enabled in the BIOS. Saionjik Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 Okay i unplugged power from my ide and booted into my bios, i looked around for Enable SATA option but couldn't locate it. I checked my bios to see if drive was detected and nothing showed up. I continued to boot and it told me to insert a system disk. whovous Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 I have what I suspect is the sanme HD in my new build. It is the only HD in the rig right now. BIOS detected mine right away, but when I tried to install Vista, it just hung. In my case, the problem seems to have been with the SATA cable. I replaced it, made sure it was well connected, and all my problems went away. You might try doing the same thing. In my case, the HD would take both molex and SATA power, and given my layout it made more sense to use the molex. If you have that option, try that, too. Finally, consider actually touching the HD when you boot up. Do you feel any vibration at all? Is it spinning? If not, that is a real clue as to where the problem lies. Saionjik Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 I got everything working , BUT A MAJOR ISSUE.... This is my setup, Old IDE drive had 2 partitions C: and D: my D: had all my old games, Now i made my new SATA drive C: and my old drives C: and D: are X: Y: Whenever i load programs that i dl'd onto D: (counter-strike/steam) I go into a game which i have 30 ping usually and now Im getting something like 100-200 ping and it fluctuates (spikes mostly) I got pissed off severly and rebooted my old windows from my IDE and my ping is back to normal? Anyone got any info on why this magical ping increase? is it because my registry isnt the same? game needs reinstall ""Cry""

red930 Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 You can use Disk Management to assign different drive letters to the old partitions that are now "mislabled". Obviously you can't do anything with the "C" drive but the "D" drive is fair game. First give a new letter to the current "D" drive. This will free the letter up for use. Then assign the "D" letter to the "old" "D" partition. This happens when a new hard drive is added to an existing install. The hard drives are assigned letters first. The customer was used to the Optical Drive being "D" and now it's "E". Like above, you change "D" to "K" then change the Optical drive to "D". Once that's done you change the new hard drive back to "E" and you're done.
Saionjik Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 Roadie, My comp assigned Drive Letters, I've editted them to X Y from C and D.... but my main problem is the lag im having. =/ It only happens on "counter-strike" and I'm wondering if it's because I did not reinstall it , that i just did some magic and changed some shortcut paths to get it working
