Vista sleep mode?

This might be quite a crazy question, but does anyone know exactly how the sleep mode works in Vista? I accidentally hit the sleep button on the keyboard and it went into sleep, then it wouldn't restore...So I had to soft-off...When Vista loaded again, everything seemed a little sluggish...Is this possible? Or am I just being paranoid? I'm considering reinstalling...Is it possible the registry/pagefile got messed up? Maybe someone that knows about how sleep works can explain it...Set my mind at ease?

Mine sleeps just fine. It seems to be the replacement for 'Standby'. Means, depending on your BIOS standby settings, (xxx1 or 3(STR) - might b some typo here, forgot the name), it either put the computer on low-power states or Suspend To Ram and shuts everything down...

If u do STR, u need to hit the power button, or else, just click the mouse or press a button on the keyboard....

Laptop is abit more complicated as it also has an option for "When the lid is close...". More options on the Control Panel and Power settings...

hope that helps :)

Maybe my question should be re-phrased...

I'm not worried about sleep mode working...I'm worried about the performance of my machine since I used it that first time...I'm wondering if it's possible that sleep mode did something to pagefile/registry that might be hurting my performance.

aaaah ok...

quick answer: of course its possible lol whats impossible in a computer? (not to be taken literally but u get the idea)

long(er) answer: if ur using STR, meaning u suspend to RAM, alot of info will be written to ur RAM, if not unloaded properly when the computer wakes up, it will definitely cripple ur performance, specially when u have small... umm... u have 2Gb tho' lol i just read that... well, u get the idea ;) No pagefile involved.

but if ur using the "type1" (god i cant remember the name) instead of 3-STR on BIOS, u will notice when the computer *sleeps*, the fan still spinning, harddrive humming, the works.. .its still ON but on a lower power-state... THAT uses the Pagefile amongs other (in XP anyway, not 100% on Vista). One thing u could do is to have a bigger pagefile or move it to a different partition... see if that helps at all... It shouldnt, as the info in the PF should be released as soon as the computer wakes up, but things could go wrong :)

Well right now I have the 2 320's...One I have the OS on and the other I have for storage.

Should I put the pagefile on the storage drive?

Should I make a non-changing pagefile like I had with XP that was 1.5 times total ram?

Right now it's like 2GB and task manager is telling me I have 100MB of free physical ram...

Does this sound right?

All you have to do is go to the power options in the control panel--> Under preferred plan-->Change plan settings-->Change advance power settings-->Scroll down to power button and maximize-->Start menu power button.....click to change option...........I changed mine to shutdown.

Pagefile should be (IMO... before i got burned by the other guys lol) on the storage one as it will continually access it while the OS is accesing the other one...

size wise it shouldnt matter. if u left Vista to automatically set it, Superfetch will *learn* ur behaviour pattern on programs and optimize it properly...

cant u move the Pagefile to the drive without the OS? Then reboot, and try to it again....

and when its laggy, check the taskManager (ctrl-alt-del) to see how much r u actually using.... it shouldnt be beyond 1Gb if the Sleep/Hybernate stuff is released properly...
