Is it possible that m-board breaks memory?

Recommended Posts

Well i dont know what to do im starting to be frustrated i have been lot of problems this past year i have had this system DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 SLI-D first problems with defect Crucial sticks then got new ones what worked over half a year, but then late last year started to act wierd random BSOD in Win etc.. i then tested my comp with MEMTEST86+ what reported lot of errors, errors appear both dual channel mode and with single sticks only installed.

Then i try Kingston sticks (i know they are not best but they are cheap and i dont OC so they should work) boght them few weeks ago they worked fine until now, now those sticks also gives me BSOD in windows XP and then i tested memtest86+ in 2.7V i got lot of errors in memtest86, then i downgraded to 2.6V what is recommended voltage to those sticks and then first pass is ok, second round got 2 errors, run that test about 2h?

Bios screen at boot says timings are set to 3-3-3-3 T1 so that should be

what those sticks are meant to run i think, i admit im not good with timing settings.

Any advice, do you think my motherboard is broken? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

And please dont ask to upgrade BIOS since i dont have floppy and sometimes that system freezes in startup screen too so i dont even want to try BIOS upgrade since it could kill whole board if it freezes during upgrade prosess.

Btw.. i have often problems with starting this computer also, screen just stays blank and sound from board is like "bombing alarm" screaming there.

I have never seen memory that runs @ 3333 timings. Try running them using 3383, and let us know how it does.:O

Uhh no, Trc is the setting you want to change to 7 or 8. Can you post all of your memory timings so that I can better help? Also check out the stock stable database for a guide on setting your RAM timings. There should be an entry for your Mobo in there.

I'll check this around lunch for updates.

Ok then i have messed up big times, i even wrote down to paper those BIOS settings while back and what i should do but somehow i have got them mixed up... anyway i change that now to correctly like you said and leave

memtest running for few hours and then i report back here.

I post those other BIOS settings you asked also but they are mostly all set to AUTO since i reset back to default while back and then changed only those 3-3-3 timings i though was right :)

Anyway thank you very much your help so far.

Hello,

I think you will find that the actual setting that needs to be 8 is called,

TRAS (tRAS).

Try these settings.

GENIE BIOS Setting >DRAM Configuration

DRAM Frequency Set (MHZ).............200 (DRAM/FSB:1/01)

Command per clock (CPC)..............Enabled

Cas latency (tCL)....................3

RAS to CAS delay (tRCD)..............3

Min RAS active time (tRAS)...........8

Row precharge time (tRP).............3

Row cycle time (tRC).................11

Row refresh cycle time(tRFC).........14

Row to Row delay (tRRD)..............AUTO

Write recovery time (tWR)............AUTO

Write to read delay (tWTR)...........AUTO

Read to write delay (tRWT)...........AUTO

Refresh period (tREF)................AUTO

Write CAS latency (tWCL).............1

DRAM Bank Interleave.................Enabled

DQS Skew Control.....................AUTO

DQS Skew Value.......................0

DRAM Drive Strength..................Level 8

DRAM Data Drive Strength.............Level 3

Max Async Latency....................6ns

Dram Response........................Normal

Read Preamble Time...................5ns

Idle Cycle Limit.....................AUTO

Dynamic Counter......................AUTO

R/W Queue Bypass.....................AUTO

Bypass Max...........................AUTO

32 Byte Granularity..................AUTO

Also make sure you are using the orange slots.

And you have 4 power connectors plugged into the board.

Well I guess this shows why you shouldn't post thoughts off the top of your head, at work. Thanks for the correction Sharp.

Yeah i changed Trp to 8 and tested it before reading Sharps post and comp booted ok, but Memtest86+ give me like 4000 errors in first half hour.

Well now i have been running Memtest86+ with Sharps recommended settings about 2h and almoust 3 pass no errors so far, so it looks like wrong timings were cause of my problems.

And yes mem sticks are in orange slots and all 4 power connectors are connected, that last part also thanks to this board since year ago when i installed this system DFI manual did not very well explained that all those different power connectors needs to be connected, back then i googled more info about them and that way found this board and sticky thread what discripes all those power connectors and their importance.

Thanks all your help guys.

Well looks like i was happy too soon, after ending memtest86 and rebooting from there comp dont post anymore screen stays black and sound is that fire siren like long peep.

What now else than BIOS reset from mb? Is there some safe boot option that have to push some key during post or something like that?

Yeah, with the pc off hold the insert key down on the keyboard.

- Keep it held down and power the pc.

- Keep it held down and wait.

- If you see the POST screen enter the bios and change the settings.

So after memtest it just stopped POSTing?

Yes right after memtest86+ when i was trying to restart machine with so called warm boot if thats the right term.. Well finally when i long enough try ON/OFF and always waiting minute or so it started ok (maybe tenth try) and now everything has been working good i mean in Win XP.

I have had this warm boot problem with this machine like since day one, but with memory problems earlier with Crucial sticks i could not have been sure if its boards fault or memories what causes it. Yesterday it just take unusually lot of ON/OFF tryes before starting properly.

Should i consider returning it under warranty for replacement .. it should have 2year warranty here if i remember right?
