suedenim Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 I'm looking at getting a widescreen LCD and I'm leaning towards the Dell 2007WFP (i've also looked here www.widescreengamingforum.com). What I'm looking for is peoples experiences with 20" WS LCD's. I plan to play a fair amount of twitchy games such as FEAR etc. The budget could go to 300 Sterling. Thanks in advance... Angry_Games Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 since you wont be playing games on it 100% of the time, I'll relate that from the day I first got my Viewsonic 19" widescreen LCD's, I knew i could never go back to CRT's. I, like you, and everyone else, use the computer for more than just gaming. Text is so much brighter and sharper. Colors to me are more vivid (however they might not be 100% accurately reproduced, but then again a standard consumer CRT won't either unless they are able to be properly calibrated) *ahem* that stuff I just mentioned, along with the extra wide real-estate, is all the reason in the world to go wide LCD as for gaming...I have to admit that even a 17" CRT still does a better job at gaming than even the best LCD's, but LCD's have come a LOOOOOONG way lately and that Dell you are looking at is fantastic (I have a local customer who has two of them, so I've seen them in action). Gaming on widescreen can be...difficult sometimes. Games that SHOULD have widescreen support like BF2, FEAR, Rainbow Six: Vegas somehow don't have widescreen support built-in. Widescreen Gaming Forums that you linked however is a godsend, and is in my list of favorites. but if you are competitive twitchy gamer (like you play Counter-Strike seriously for prizes or something), then an LCD is not what you want. You want to stick to a a good CRT. if you are just a twitchy gamer who loves to game but it isn't a career etc, then there's no reason to not get that Dell 2007 as it is a great monitor. suedenim Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 I don't game competitively as I couldn't afford not to pay the mortgage in getting from "poor" to "good enough to win money". Also the monitor would be used by the missus quite a lot too. Did you notice if the 2007 black barred games that didn't support the wider resolutions? Cheers... Oceanborn Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 The Viewsonic 20'' is an awesome monitor...I regret not getting for being afraid my graphics card at the time not being able to handle the native resolution of the monitor....I got the viewsonic vx922 instead, great monitor but when I see the screen real state of the widescreens it makes me wanna have one... the dell is an excelent monitor...but I'd go with the viewsonic
red930 Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Did you notice if the 2007 black barred games that didn't support the wider resolutions? If it's anything like my 2405 it'll stretch the game somewhat, still looks fine to play games though. I'm not sure what it does exactly but it doesn't straight up stretch it, might alter the edges more than the center or something. I very much like my Dell, but they do tend to be expensive and Viewsonic has a pretty good userbase.
red930 Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 this might be considered, http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/product...cs=19&c=us&l=en
UncleDavid218 Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 I have 2 2007WFPs and they are absolutely awesome, though Dells 22-inch costs about the same (albeit at the same resolution) If you would like more information, just ask. ilikeducttape Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 hmm, well, i'll be honest here. a month ago i was all hyped and excited about vista. however, after what ive been reading over the past couple days, im not too excited about vista anymore. i do have a coupon to get vista home premium for free. im still planning on geting it, but i think i'll just put it in my drawer for a year or two before i even think about installing it. we'll see... Yukon Trooper Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I have the Viewsonic 20" 2025 1680x1050 monitor which I am overly happy with. I did lots of research before buying and read lots of comparative reviews and the 2025 always came out on top. These are the rewards it has won: http://viewsonic.com/products/desktopdispl...25wm/awards.htm. You cannot get this one anymore but the newer versions are out; the 2035's. It has a gorgeous piano black finish to it and all I hear are good things. I imagine its the same monitor but a few minor upgrades plus that killer piano black finish  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16824116066 BTW most of the games that don't "officially" support widescreen can be made widescreen by changing values in the games config. I do it with all the Battlefields no problem. I'll never go back to a standard box screen, widescreen gaming is too awesome. If you go to http://www.tweakguides.com/ they show you how to tweak all your config settings for max performance plus how to set widescreen gaming resolutions. taowulf Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I have had a Dell 2005FPW on my desk for about 2 years now, and i couldn't be happier. Sure better have come out since, but I love the resolution, the widescreen (for gaming and movies) and the size of the 20.1 inch widescreen. As well as the smaller footprint. Not that I wouldn't LOVE to have a widescreen with a faster response, but there is plenty of use left in the 2005FPW. My old 19" Hitachi sits mostly unused on the corner of my desk, when I do fire it up and connect it to my work laptop, the curvature of the screen (and it was considered "flat" 10 years ago) bugs the hell out of me. The only thing the 2005FPW sucks for if I connect the PS2 to it. S-video in, but it just looks terrible. But that really isn't what it is for anyway. I used to have problems when i went back to work and had to use a standard sized LCD, but i finally adjusted to that switch as well. Of course, it helps that they upgraded me from a crappy 14' LCD to a 18' LCD a year ago.
suedenim Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I think the Dell 2007WFP is my preferred choice as I like the fact that they have USB ports and the extra connectors. Might change my mind if people start mentioning poor gaming performance...
