ooztuncer Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Howdy! I did this couple of weeks ago and posted in another forum but also would like to share it here - in case some people who wants to void the warranty on the spot Today I spent some time and changed my SB and NB cooling. Here are some shots... 1) very very nasty TIM under SB and NB: http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userpics/10024/mod1.JPG http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userpics/10024/mod2.JPG 2) needed a heat gun to take off TIM on SB and alcohol, lots of: http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userpics/10024/mod3.JPG 3) Finally they are cleaner: http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userpics/10024/mod4.JPG http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userpics/10024/mod5.JPG 4) A shot of stock cooling system (after cleaning the TIM on the SB heatsink) - have no idea why they put gray band for passive ram cooling http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userpics/10024/mod6.JPG 5) using good old as5 and a spatula: http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userpics/10024/mod7.JPG http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userpics/10024/mod8.JPG http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userpics/10024/mod9.JPG 6) Scythe Kaze 40mm fan on top of SB heatsink using Loctite: http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userp...10024/mod10.JPG 7) Using evercool VC-RE for NB cooling - was a tight fit but I think it is OK: http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userp...10024/mod11.JPG http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userp...10024/mod12.JPG http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userp...10024/mod13.JPG http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userp...10024/mod14.JPG http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userp...10024/mod15.JPG http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userp...10024/mod16.JPG http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userp...10024/mod17.JPG 8) Using a saw and metal cutter scissor - not looking so good but hey it worked: http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userp...10024/mod18.JPG http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userp...10024/mod19.JPG http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userp...10024/mod20.JPG 9) It's done http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userp...10024/mod21.JPG http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userp...10024/mod22.JPG http://weboperative.com/OCIDB/albums/userp...10024/mod23.JPG Hope it helps... EDIT: i think i need to mention that (in case) after above mods no more RMA possibility exists...
politbureau Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Nice work! Love the gold tablecloth, BTW The standard Thermalright HR-05 also fits on this board (but not the SLI), without any mods. However it likely will not fit with larger tower-type CPU heatsinks. And uck, the stock TIM on this board is terrible! Replacing it with AS5 of Ceramique is almost a must. Technohydra Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 I hear that...it's not really thermal paste, it's thermal PADS, which melt once they heat up. The big thing about it is I hate removing it, it has to be heated off or scratched off. I have found that an evercool VC-RE will fit the Northbridge. I cut the heatpipe off of the PWM heatsink, about 1/4" from the fins, and soldered it back shut. I also put superglue on the edge of 4 BGA heatsinks, added AS Ceramique to the top PWM chips, and then glued the BGA sinks in place. Sounds horrible, works great. Praz Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 and soldered it back shut. Why?
