Finally Going to Upgrade for NFII W/ XP2600M - Please Check my Plan

Ok All, After careful research here is my plan for building a new (AM2) system. Please check out what I've chosen and feel free to provide constructive advice. Also, I will be going SLI but I will start off with 1 card. Please note that I have not decided which of the two types of memory I want to go with. Advice/expirience with those two would be very helpful. I'm not looking to get the bleeding edge products. I want a very new system for a middle of the road investment. I expect to be able to get a nice OC with this setup. Anyone have any guesses at were I should be able to get this system to run stable at? I do plan to OC as much as possible all parts. Is anything going to bottleneck me (I doubt it - but am open if I've missed something).

Thanks in advance!:

Hello,

Ever thought about the Intel core 2 Duo CPUs?

One thing that I always go for is 2 hard drives.

Instead of the 1 400GB why not get 2 200GB drives?

+ If one fails you still have another one.

+ Good to store data in case you need to format one.

+ Better to have the virtual memory page file on a separate hard drive.

You must buy a dual channel kit for the best possible performance.

Out of the 2 kits you mentioned the OCZ one is better but have another look at your options and DC kits.

First of all thanks for replying. I will definitely be adding more hard drives. I am starting with 400GB because they are cheap and I will need a ton of space. I will keep adding large drives. My XP2600M already has 5 drives totally over 700GB, I don't want that many drives in this machine for similar space. Good observation however. I always partition everything down to make it managable. I realize if this drive goes, so does my system however I have had tremendous luck with Samsung drives. IMHO by far the best.

As for Intel, yes, they really are impressive but I'm just loving AMD. Nothing more to it really.

Thanks for the info on the memory, I will look at my choices again. Perhaps 2GB matches mem then? Or are you saying get 2x512 matched sticks? Thanks!

For $30-50 more you can get a 7950 512MB Video card.

Dude, don't get that 7900GT, that's a rip off for that price.

Splave is the FS/FT thread has a brand new eVGA 7950 he's selling for $210 shipped!

As far as getting two drives, I think maybe Sharp was suggesting it for a RAID-5 config. Which is good advice.

Yeah a 2x1GB kit.

I wasn't :)

I was guess then, that going for the mem that is optimized for the NF590 (IE the OCZ 2x1GB Setup) would kinda be OK? It's only another $60 or so.

Again, thanks - good point.

Laydback - Thanks for the advice, I will defnitely look at the 7950. Appreciated.

Anyone else have any other thoughts?

What about the 4000 X2 vs the 1212?? Do you all think that the Opteron is the better choice of the two? Should I expect 3 GZ with proper cooling?

Am I correct in understanding that the only cards that will run DirectX10 and SLI are the 8800s? If so, I might as well....

$400 - ouch.

The road to spending a ton........ DirectX10 wont be a big deal for a year most likely. I dont see the lower 8800 as being that great of a bang for the buck yet. The 7900GS is a steal or if you want more performance get a 19XX 250MB card if you dont mind over clocking they have a ton of headroom. There should be mainstream DX10 cards out in a month if you hate to upgrade.

You might want to get another case- you are better off getting a good case and the cooling seperate. There are some great kits out there that are not that expensive like the corsair.

You really need to at least look at the stacker if you are a hard drive addict and or if you want watercooling. Tons of room and great cooling. The AMD's dont make much heat so there is no hurry air cooling is very effective unless you simply much have the best but the TT is not it. That is a whole seperate thread though plenty like it in the cooling section.

Dont really plan on SLI unless you get both at the same time in a year when the card goes down in price it will be because there are much better cards out.

Save a little now to put in the bank for a later upgrade when the DX10 cards get cheap and fast. Any good card right now is going to be a huge upgrade in all ballyhooing.

Agreed 2gb memory minimum!

That is actually a good deal on the hard drive though Hitachi's are a little faster two 320's- that would be nice!
