IS XBOX 360 worth it?

Recommended Posts

Hello folks, as part of my son's late christmas present, i was looking to get an XBOX 360.

I see there are several different packages to choose from. He likes to play online so could you recommend a choice? I have NO clue about any of these consoles. He does have a regualar XBOX, what difference does the 360 give you over the regular version?

i'm biased here since i have a 360 but if your son must have fun now, i believe the 360 is the way to go. it is more established and has the largest user base. i haven't picked up a xbox live kit yet but you can get the Gold version from Target for cheap.

just by being around the longest 360 is the best console right now. i have played wii but not the ps3. the wii is fun in its novelty but i cannot see myself playing those games for that long;however, zelda was fun because it was an RPG.

gears of war is probably the best online game to play and if your son loves online gaming, halo 3 is going to make you best dad. in addition live is really cool since it also offers Live Arcade which has downloadable games which some are better than what's actually offered in shelves. Including old Playstation Nintendo games even.

there are a few versions of xbox-i'm hoping you know the difference between the xbox and xbox360. Ultimately you will need the hard drive so you should just buy the premium version to get the hard drive and the wireless controller and mic. It also comes with component cables-no optical cable.

to take the other side, they have only been out for a few months. When 360 was first out it was not so hot. So it's a matter of timing. hope this helped.

You definetely want the premium version which costs $400. Comes with the hard drive which makes up the differece between the two packages. The premium also comes with the wireless controller instead of wired. I got mine at launch so I got a headset and DVD remote Im not sure if you still get those. Premium is the only way to go IMO.

What the others said...

You would have to pay around $50 for a year of Gold service, which is required to play online with other people. You would also need an internet connection for that; pick up a compatible wireless adapter (USB), or use the ethernet cable included in the Premium Version. Premium, in addition to what Rainmaka said, comes with a headset too, so you don't have to worry much about that.

The 20GB hard drive is larger than the first edition Xbox's 8GB drive. It can store videos and whatnot that you can download off of the Gold service. Be aware that you need to have the hard drive to play older Xbox games...

Personally, I think it is worth it. But I only have one game for it... GOW... kinda waiting for Halo 3 and GTA (die-hard GTA fan here) :D

My Wii provides pretty good entertainment too. But I would get it if your kid likes to play in groups... I have more fun playing in groups with the Wii. Owning both, I would say for gameplay the 360 would be better. The Wii would be a bit more fun playing though due to its innovative-ness (lol).. I was intrigued by the technology in it, too.

All in all, the $400 Premium version is the way to go.

Dunno if you live near a MicroCenter, but if you do you missed out on a decent deal from last Thanksgiving to the end of 2006.. $100 off any 360 console. That's what I did to get my 360. And the rebate came back already... I'm happy with my $300 Premium version.

Rainmaka, the DVD remote is no longer included with retail packages.

to me, the xbox 360 is just a souped up xbox. don't blast me about how much FASTER it is, because no ., everything is faster. the Wii is totally new and original. the ps3 has six-axis and the new cell technology and blu-ray. In my opinion, the 360 is just not innovative enough

Well worth it.

If you have HDTV you might want to think about spending an extra $200 for the HD-DVD player. That is also well worth it.

So you support the PS3 then?

Cell technology is new, but it's harder to develop games for. IBM's tri-core processor does just fine at playing the games. Six-axis isn't anything new, at any rate it's a step backward. Sure it has motion sensing technology, but the rumble? I would say Sony put in motion-sensing to divert attention from the fact it has no rumble, and used it as a stupid reason why the Suxasses has no rumble.

The PS3 has Blu-ray? Guess what, that's what's driving the cost of the thing up. Microsoft was smart for once to not release the 360 with an HD-DVD player (it's not like they could have anyway). Instead, they have it as an option, so don't blast the 360 just cause it doesn't include an HD-DVD drive.

360 has a better GPU.

The 360 may not be innovative, but I wouldn't say the PS3 is either. Innovative = Wii.

Like i said, time will tell. Wii is innovative and PS3 is just a super computer.

The 360 gold pack can be as low as 30 bux i believe if you price match it.

Wii:

Innovative, Best party games, I'd buy one for my parents. Extremely portable too. I love this system as well as my 360.

PS3:

There is just so much uncertainty with this system. Forget about the lack of games and prohibitive cost for a second. Let's take a look at this 1080p they are touting. How many people are actually going to be able to afford a high def TV larger than 50" so that they can actually use their "eagle eyes" to distinguish 720p from 1080p. You would have to sit less than a few feet away in order to tell the quality difference, which at that point IMO is stupid. Really how great is the motion sensor have you tried it? I haven't so I can't make a call but unless it is light years ahead of the Wii controller-and it definitely isn't, it was just something PS3 threw in to compete with Wii.

Now let's talk about the Bluray technology. just wait for it what's the point of purchasing it now just so you can kick yourself IF sony loses the HD wars? Does sony really expect all their HD user base to stem from Sony PS3s? Perhaps since their first stand alone player is $999. Also it is so hard to obtain the diode to create the laser that the price will be very high for a while especially since they are already taking a huge hit ($800+ to manufacture, $600 sell-Let alone the marketing costs).

I'm not saying PS3 isn't fun or terrific, but like most new technology you should just wait. However, their future does seem rather bleak.

p.s. Where did the creator of Final Fantasy, Sony's dark horse, go? Yes they jumped ship to Microsoft.

Excellent thread.

Think I'll be picking up a 360 in the future too. I seriously think the Blue-Ray vs HD-DVD will be decided by the kids who get there parents to buy them a console. From what I hear from my 12 year old nephew and his friends they are backing the 360. They are not even interested in the PS3. I'm guessing it's pretty much because of the online community.

I'll probably just pick one up for the HD-DVD. Until GTA comes out anyways. I'll second that.

I recently read somewhere that the porn industry will be the ultimate deciding factor in the Blu-Ray HD-DVD battle & they have thrown their considerable weight behind HD-DVD. It was pointed out that the porn industry decided the VHS vs. Beta war when they backed VHS.

Yea, very excellent point. Porn is BIG business. So let's recap.

Porn = probably HD-DVD

Kids = probably HD-DVD - thriving x-box community

Budget = HD-DVD - stand alone players are cheaper

=

Good Bye Blue-Ray:)

Just so we don't totally hi-jack this thread....Yea Kingfisher get the 360. Your kid will love it.(you'll get some too. heheh) What the difference between the XBox and the XBox 360 is kind of like asking what's the difference between nf3 and nf4. Just newer, bigger and badder in layman's terms.
