jaz Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 I want to put a naked mobile amd 4000+ on my s754 mobo. I would love to keep my xp-90 as it cools great, but hear horror stories about people crushing the core. I also read some posts that people said 'just don't rock the cooler when you're installing it and keep even pressure when installing, and others using shims so as to offload the pressure directly on the core. My other option is to rip a lid off my old amd 3000+ and put it on the M-4000+, the heat doesn't warrent an issue, so i hear. Any input is much appreciated. Also, it's been suggested to me to do an overnight cmos clear. others in flashchat have said no need to do overnight. just clear for a few minutes. I want to get going with this, but want to do it the best way. Thanks in advance.

Usually a 10-30 sec CMOS clear is sufficient; but if there are still issues, try clearing it overnight (with the CMOS battery removed). I've thought of that also. Thanks for the input. Thunda posted how to install it with no shims, rather....he suggests sanding down the bumps in the corners of the bracket so it makes good contact. But i think he means a different board. Not a s754. The ihs isn't THAT thick...
radodrill Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Check this out; it's designed for socket A CPUs but you might be able to make it work for you.
ReelFiles Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Stick a decent size strip of black duct tape on a cutting surface and cut a grid on it with a razorblade. Cut 16-20 pieces, depending on the tape's gauge. Make each piece a little less than 1/4"x1/4". Attach them to each corner of the CPU and keep adding layers to match the height of the core. Check if it's even with a straight edge or a credit card. Align it from diagonal corners across the core and hold it up to a light. Make sure you add the same amount of layers to each of the four stacks.
jaz Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 Check this out; it's designed for socket A CPUs but you might be able to make it work for you. naw, i called them and they are too big. I'm now looking for the same material but for socket 754. If anybody knows where i can get one, please let me know. {Take some black (plumber's) duct tape or painters tape and cut several small (<1/4"x1/4") squares with a razor blade. 16-20 should do it} 16-20 X 4 = i guess i just wouldn't have the patience to spend all day cutting tape. But i thank you for your input, Reel. Correction: Reel, do you mean 16-20 pieces altogether or for each corner? I thought about it after i posted, and 16-20 pieces of tape in one corner seems rather high...lol. I'm bein' naive again, i think. ReelFiles Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 All day? Takes less than 5 mins, hehe. I just stuck a decent size strip of the black duct tape on my desk and cut a grid on it with a razorblade. 16-20 total not 16-20 x4. ASFAIK there aren't any shims available for CPUs with an IHS. red930 Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 you don't need a shim... the mobile chips come naked *as standard*... i've put a xp-120 on the following naked chips: 3500 venice (small core) 2x 146 venus/sandiego (next size up) 1x 148 venus/sandiego 170 toledo/denmark (massive lol) and ALL without shims... you need to file down the feet and possibly need to file out hollows of the thermalright "P4" type bracket for component clearance (i had to on for my ultra-d and neo2plat) most IHS removal guides don't tell you about this, but i included a section about bracket modification for aircooling in my guide: A64 IHS Removal Guide @ Overclockersclub.com (with bracket explanation and pics)

radodrill Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 CPU @ 3.92GHz ...nice 'oc radodrill! I'm hopin' to push it even further once I get better cooling on the chipset and PWMIC. Man this H2O rig is nice!!

Steve...you're getting as bad as me! Now why would i need a shim for an ihs???
