mxrider750 Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 Dear Forum, I have a DFI nF4 SLI-DR motherboard which i have been using for a quite some time now. I just recently built my own water cooling system, and have been messing around with that. Until recently my computer doesn't seem to want to turn on anymore. I have not figured out if its the cpu or the motherboard but i have narrowed it down to these. There's no way for me to test these out as i don't have any extra's laying around, or anything compatible with these parts. I went to a local computer store and they don't even have 939 motherboards! Believe that! So anyways here's my problem. When the cpu is clamped in the motherboard and everything is hooked up. I can not turn on the computer. The light right next to the ram is off. But when i release the cpu the light comes back on. Do you guys think this is the cpu or the motherboard that is causing the problem. If you have any suggestions, that would be appreciated. Thank you.
Praz Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 Without either a processor or motherboard it's going to be next to impossible for you to diagnose the problem.
wardog Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 But when i release the cpu the light comes back on. Â Knowing that this(quoted here) has been attempted while power is present you truly do now find youself in a conundrum. Â I see a cheap 939 MB in your future. Maybe more. mxrider750 Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 Well at first i thought it was soley the motherboard. But i'm just wondering is it possible that if the cpu is dead. It would completely sever the connection in the motherboard turning off that light?
mxrider750 Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 Also the power is plugged in, but the computer is not turned on. When i tighten the clamp without the cpu in it. I think i'm just going to take my cpu to a shop and tell them to test and see if it works. That'll deffinetly determine what my problem is . mxrider750 Posted January 1, 2007 Posted January 1, 2007 I guess i'll have to take the whole computer with.
HITandRUN Posted January 1, 2007 Posted January 1, 2007 You need to test the components on known working pc’s!!! Only that way you will be able to find out which parts are bad. Let us know how you make out!
mxrider750 Posted January 1, 2007 Posted January 1, 2007 OK i brought my pc in to a computer repair shop, told them to stick a cpu in and see if it booted. Well everything booted right up, so it turns out my cpu is dead. So i just ordered an opteron 165 dual core.

mxrider750 Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 I believe i used too much thermal compound on my naked X2 +3800. Might have shorted it out.
