Switching to XP64 - Any Suggestions?

Recommended Posts

I know its been a year since this thread was started, has anything changed XP-64? I'm curious about switching from the 32bit version, and am wondering if the compatability issues are still present.

Any thoughts?

some peripheral driver support is somewhat limited (mainly printers/scanners); just check the manufacturer's websites in advance for X64 drivers.

I'm running XP X64 on my main rig and I'm quite happy with it.

Only compatibility issues I've run into are some old games. Max Payne and Alpha Centauri are the two I'd very much like to play again.

Other than that, it's worked fine with my (albeit new) scanner and printer.

Alpha Centauri works fine for me in Vista 64-bit, I imagine it shouldn't be much harder to make function in XP.

I seem to recall playing Max Payne as well, not sure about that one though, the crappy widescreen support really killed off that game for me.

running dual boot with Vista-64 and I still spend 95% of the time in XP (should tell you all you need to know right there).

Oh, and I STILL CANNOT PRINT IN 64-bit OS with my HP Laserjet =/

I've been running XP64 on my laptop for about a year / year and a half now and I haven't had any problems. Granted I don't use a printer, the only thing that I couldn't get working was my Cisco Aironet PCMCIA a/b/g card, no biggie I already have a minipci wireless card, just wanted the cisco one for site survey.

problem is, if you and me and others still have that ONE or TWO things that just won't work, then it really isn't what you can consider a "prime-time ready" OS. If little middling things don't work for us still, what can YOU expect (or unexpectedly find out when . don't work!) to have issues with?

My Epson printer works slick, 32 bit, or 64 bit, all the xp boxes share from it just fine (except shVista) go figure.........32 bit about 80% of the time on the game box, 20% 64 bit........seems to do some things faster, and i got lucky, all my hardware works. Only thing critical that does not work on any 64 bit os.....is my cisco vpn for work.........(they get cranky when i can't remote in and fix what they break)

Yeah, damn Cisco, that's the ONLY app that I still keep a 32-bit VM around for.
