Is RAID faster???

Well, a week ago I fouled up my RAID setup. I was attempting to increase the partition my OS occupies. I was using Partition Commander by VCOM. It has worked great every time I have used it.

What I didn't realize is PC doesn't play nice with software RAID setups. It occupies the same MBR sectors as Windows. Therefore, it wiped out my second partition. What it does is hide other NTFS drives on your system and I couldn't unhide "D" drive. I was left with doing a complete new install of XP Pro.

To make a long story short, I couldn't get my USB Floppy Drive to load the drivers for RAID. So, I decided to use both drives separately. You can see the drives in my sig. Simply put --- I can't tell any difference while playing games; Half-Life 2, Quake 4 or Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter.

By the way, I am back at stock settings, also. No OC on any component.

I guess what good ole H_G once said is true. Most of the speed that we see is in our minds. You see what you want to see. I might see a difference in benchmarks, but the games run the same.

No doubt in my mind!

Yes, but not for actual FPS. The only thing I've seen it help me in is Defragging and loading things like games and windows, which I have seen a HUGE performance increase in. Windows loads in two seconds (not joking) and defragging is no longer a chore. I haven't seen any noticeable difference from 2x Raptors separated vs 2x Raptors in Raid-0 in ANY of my games FPS-wise.

Placebo is a powerful thing. It's how 70% of the audio equipment business stays in business!

I say for RAID, with a PCI-E controller card, good. Mobo controller.. eh. Software RAID 0 in linux, I not only benchmark the same as a normal drive with bonnie++, but don't notice any difference either.

I use the nVraid on my SLi-DR here and it does just fine. I'd love to get one of those sick SCSI cards and some 15k RPM drives, but the cash isn't flowing right now. Christmas killed it. :(

Using a partition manager with a RAID array of any type is an iffy proposition at best.

Don't give up on using a RAID-0 array. I've run them on these nF4 boards since day one and wouldn't have it any other way.

I really only see a second or two improvement in map loading. It's really very small. Windows loading... wow... made it worth it.

On BF2 I slaughter my freinds with loading times... First to the jet, first to bail at Wake as USMC = loss for China.

I hear what you say about partition managers. If I had read a bit more closely, I wouldn't have even tried it.

I only gave up on RAID because I am at the point where I have to call M$ every time I want to install XP. I have used my max of on-line "Activations". It takes six times longer to do it by phone. I may try later.

Ehh......I have been using Raid 0 for years and the difference on certain things is very noticeable !!! For example its ideal if you have it set up in a File Server....but you know the risks and drawbacks to that one! Better alternatives are Raid 10 Raid 5 and even better still Raid 6 is the best!!

Some things seem to be much faster, while others only a bit so. I used to do it with small drives to get more space. Now I use large drives to have more space than I think I'll be able to use... As I always seem to find a way to fill up a large drive... The extra performance is nice too :D

Same here! A few weeks ago I bought another Raptor to make 3 out of the 2 I already have! After installing everything I didn't see any performance increase so I went back to the 2 drives in raid 0! No I got one for sale. Brand new two days used! :)
