demonR6 Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 I was looking for some adivce on a new hard drive. My computer is primarily used for gaming, occasionally I listen to mp3s and browse the web. Currently I have the SATA drive listed in my sig. I am only using 40% of my drive if that. I keep it clean, using Diskeeper for the constant defrag, Registry Mechanic as well on a weekly basis. More or less it is as clean and efficient as it can get. On that end I was considering another faster drive to run the OS and games. I can stick with a newer SATA drive with an 8m cache or I was considering a 74GB Raptor. I am aware of the newer generation, mack daddy 150GB Raptor but I don't know if that would be overkill at this juncture. I only have two or three games loaded ever so it is not a question of me having fifty plus games and a load of crap littering my drive. If anyone would offer a hand and some suggestions I would appreciate it much.
Kingfisher Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 You can purchase another maxtor same model drive and build a RAID-0 array. That will speed up your games a bit at the lowest cost.
HITandRUN Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 .... or buy my Raptor I got for sale in my "for sale thread" check it out (see link below)
Thasp Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 I like the new Seagates. 99% as fast as the raptor, with 1% as many failures. You can't lose! Seagate was the first to make a quiet hard drive, and they are one of the most reliable brands.. if not the most reliable.
calvintang Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 or get two hitachis 80gbs and raid them.
iamkoza Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 or get two hitachis 80gbs and raid them. or 3 if you have good airflow in your case, but you can get 2 in raid 0 for less than $100, performance will kill that of a single raptor. PhoetuS Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 or 3 if you have good airflow in your case, but you can get 2 in raid 0 for less than $100, performance will kill that of a single raptor. Exactly.
war59312 Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 Less than $100 too: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16822148140
OtisN89 Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 Probably the most cost effective would be to get a new drive like the one you have and RAID 0 them. But I didn't see a 100GB Maxtor on Newegg. Other than that, any 80s or 160s or such in RAID 0 would be good. But I like the idea of 16Mb cache, for $63: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16822136062
Thasp Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 Three drives in RAID 0 is insane. You're practically asking your data to walk out the door. You triple your chance of losing everything..
PhoetuS Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 Three drives in RAID 0 is insane. You're practically asking your data to walk out the door. You triple your chance of losing everything.. Thats why you only use the RAID 0 for the OS install & temp/non-essential files. Keep all the files that are vital on a separate non-RAID drive & do regular backups of files on the RAID to non-RAID Drives.
UncleDavid218 Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 The best thing to do is get 2x 250GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 drives and put them in RAID-0 Then, if you choose to, get another drive for backups (if you don't already)
