Can I run an opteron CPU?

I noticed that the motherboard will run a sempron, but I have no idea if it will run an opteron. I'm upgrading to a dual core CPU but I'm not sure what will work and what won't.

I see no reason why it wouldn't. So long as its socket 939 and not 940. There aren't that many makers that "officially" support Optys but for the most part they will run in most 939 boards.

I'm running a dual core Opteron 165 in my CFX3200 with no problems, up to 2.7ghz very easily.

Lots of people run Opterons on this board, but DFI officially don't support it at the request of AMD.

 

They are almost, if not totally, identical to certain Athlons anyway, but with a different name. Just make sure you get a socket 939 and not 940

Ok, which is a better CPU, the Opteron or the Athlon 64 x2? I notice that the x2s have the HT at 2000Mhz and the Opterons at 1000Mhz.

They both have the HT at 2000MHz.

 

I would go for the Opteron because they are easier to be found. Athlon X2's have somewhat disappeared. Plus, with an Opteron you get double the cache (unless you order an X2 4400/4800) and they usually overclock higher too.

I run an Opteron 165 with no issues. I think New Egg has them right now for about $139 which is a real deal. Of course that is for an OEM chip.

1. Newegg seems to insist that the Opterons are 1000MHz HT rather than a 2000MHz HT. Does anyone know why? If it is true, how much real world performance does it mean?

 

2. If it really has a 2000MHz HT, then what is the difference between, say, an Opteron 165 and an equivalently clocked X2 w/1MB L2 cache... uh, other than model number?

1) Probably just a goofup. Dunno what the performance hit would be.

Generally speaking you will find that the Opterons will OC better. X2s are ok but the Optys have more play in them.

No problem!

 

1) I highly doubt Newegg would care about a typo, all they would care about is getting your business (and thus your money).

 

2) Most people here own 165s or 170s. They will usually clock the same. Just look for any CPU with a stepping of CCBBE.
