XFX has released the first-ever overclocked versions of the powerful new GeForce® 8800-series video cards into the general population, in very limited release. Based on the long-running success of XFX’s ultra-high-performance XXX series cards, hard-core gaming enthusiasts who crave the finest in performance products will need to move fast to get one of these in-demand video cards.

The goods at stake: A choice of the top-of-the-line 8800 GTX XXX Edition, overclocked from the standard 575Mhz Core/1.8Mhz Memory Clock speed to a red-lined 630 Mhz Core/2.0 Ghz Memory clock and a super-high-performance 8800 GTS XXX Edition dialed up from a standard 500 Mhz Core/1.6 Memory clock speed to 550 Mhz Core/1.8 Ghz Memory clock speed.

Working within its own factory setting, XFX has two research and development teams that are continually working on new procedures that will maximize card performance, enhance card stability, improve life expectancy and offer serious endurance. XFX also has a vigorous test protocol in place, with each card tested based on 12 to 15 points on both Intel- and AMD-based machines. And, before any card leaves the factory, it is tested with 3DMark06.

Would this mean that we can clock the current XFX cards at the same speeds? If any of you is buying one of these beasts would you mind to share it's BIOS/

...I should have waited for this.

BTW, though I could be wrong, I think that I read a couple of articles on the internet that NIVIDIA banned the factory-overclocking the 8800 series before…

Wait, I did a quick Google search and found this: “Nvidia Forbids Factory Overclocking on 8800 Series" , but I did not find the news/articles that NVIDIA allowed the fatory-overclocking of the 8800 series…

I wonder how XFX worked around.

[EDIT] fuond the news: "XFX has a licence to overclock G80"

Should be able to. I run mine at stock settings as I have found no need to increase the clocks. But it is completely stable at 620/2.0.

I' have seen much the same...though perhaps they are only allowing it a certain time away from the original launch period. I'm sure Nvidia knows most people can clock stock ones to the same speed, but this might get those 'unknowledgeable' people into buying into a new one.

Too bad, I really was hoping they wouldn't allow any overclocking at all. (on the retail side of things i mean)

With an OC GTX arent you going to get even more of a cpu bottleneck? With me new 939 185 I got myself a Gainward GTS, and has performaned brilliantly! Somehow I got my clock goes up to 655 (defaults at 513)... I dont notice any artifcats and thats what ATiTool got it to before it clocked out around 660. The temps arent terrible either with 100% fan... so get a gts and save £100+ :P

O.K.,,

The Memory Clock & Clock rate of the XFX 8800 GTX XXX version are; 2 GHz & 630 MHz.

Then, I set these of my cards to the ones of the XXX version's in the nTune;

  • Core Bus: 630 MHz
  • Memory bus: 1000 MHz

nTune “Adjust GPU Settings”:

nTune “View System Information”:

ocinnt02gw5.th.jpg

…Since the memory is DDR, Double Data Rate, I think that the value of the “Memory bus” is 1000 MHz * 2 = 2 GHz. Is this correct? (, though in the “View System Information” the “GPU memory speed” is “1000.000 MHz”…)

Anyway, after I ran each of the “SM2.0 Graphic Tests”, “CPU Test” and “HDR/SM3.0 Graphic Test” of the 3DMark06 for 10 times to see if my system would be stable with these settings, I ran the set of the “SM2.0 Graphic Tests”, “CPU Test” and “HDR/SM3.0 Graphic Test” for one time to measure the scores.

Here’re the scores:

oc01pa3.th.jpg

Compared the test results: (default settings – overclocked settings)

Main Test Results:

  • 3DMark Score 13135 – 13320 Marks
  • SM 2.0 Score 5986 – 5953 Marks
  • SM 3.0 Score 7020 – 7294 Marks
  • CPU Score 2516 – 2527 Marks

Detailed Test Results

Graphics Tests

  1. Return to Proxycon 48.878 - 48,891 FPS
  2. Firefly Forest 50.894 – 50,331 FPS

CPU Tests

  • CPU1 - Red Valley 0.808 – 0.815 FPS
  • CPU2 - Red Valley 1.254 – 1.253 FPS

HDR Tests

  1. Canyon Flight (SM 3.0) 78.25 – 83.477 FPS
  2. Deep Freeze (SM 3.0) 62.152 – 62.409 FPS

Didn’t get a gain as much as I expected (…I do not have time to play the games with the overclocked settings tonight…). I guess, the overclocked scores could have been a bit higher if I did not do the ten 3DMark06 runs before I did the tests to measure the scores… I will run the tests again, maybe tomorrow (BTW, I finally made up my mind to drill a ventilation hole on the top panel of my case for the second 8800 cards. Hope that could a help to cool the second cards down).

One thing about the overclocked settings in the nTune; the settings do not survive the system restart – after the system gets restarted, the settings are re-set to the default ones. Does someone know how to set the overclocked settings permanently?

...drilled the hole on the top panel of my case:

I will beautify the hole and scars later.

The second GPU temperature has dropped by about 5 °C.; now it’s 61 °C at idle.

And I ran the 3DMark06 with the overclocked setting;

maic0.th.jpg

…still did not get a gain.

Is this as good as the OC XFX 8800 GTX can get?

[uPDATE]

After updated the BIOS to P23 Final and re-installed the chipset & graphic drivers, ran the 3DMark with the factory-overclocked XXX settings again;

retestlx9.th.jpg

…still did not see much difference.

I like to see the reviews of the factory-overclocked XXX cards…

I think you should be scoring higher than that with 8800gtx sli, why havent you jacked up that extreme yet? and I think you could go much higher on those vid cards clocks (nice setup by the way )
