WintersFury Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 I just got this bad boy and was looking at it. And besides it being absolutely massive, it almost looks like the heatpipes wern't sealed. Theres divits at the top of 3 out of 4 capped ends and it almost looks like you can see a lil black hole at the bottom of them. So just wondering if any of you guys with Thermalright HSF's have noticed this on yours as well? Just trying to figure out if it's normal or if I should send it back. As well 1 is capped and the other 3 are not... Wouldn't be thinking about it if they were all the same.
General Septem Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 Yeah that doesn't sound right. Can you RMA it for a replacement?
WintersFury Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 Yeah, got it from the egg so that shouldn't be any problem. And if the new one has the holes in the top as well, I'll just have to guess that's normal. I'll hold off a few days to see if anyone with a Thermalright product responds and send of an email to their customer support to see what they say about it. laserred Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 Got any pics?
General Septem Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 And if the new one has the holes in the top as well, I'll just have to guess that's normal. Well... I've never seen a heatpipe with holes in it before, and seeing as how it kind of relies on being a sealed environment I'd have to guess it's defective. Good luck with your RMA though. WintersFury Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 Got any pics? It would be too small to really be able to see with a pic, but I'll see what I can do.
General Septem Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 It would be too small to really be able to see with a pic, but I'll see what I can do. Try turning the exposure time up, the flash off, the lights in the room up, and mounting the camera to a tripod or some stable surface. WintersFury Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 If I had a tripod that would be doable, but I know my hand isn't steady enough to get a stable shot. I did break out a magnifying glass and two are definately sealed and just have depressions in the top of the pipe but there is metal at the bottom. The thrid I'm not quite so sure as I can see black at the bottom. So I think I'll send it back and hope the new one is better. Not that I need it right yet so I have the time to send it back. If you lived just a hundred or so miles closer I'd offer to come over and take a look for myself I don't have a tripod either, usually I set the camera on a shelf or something with varying degrees of success. It sounds to me like it's defective, though. Best bet is to send it back to Newegg, and if they inspect it and find it to be alright they might just send it back, or send you a new one. Newegg's pretty good about that, they even took my 7950GT back when it caught fire.
WintersFury Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 Newegg's pretty good about that, they even took my 7950GT back when it caught fire. Yowza! Crazy stuff. Yeah their great about returns though, they took back a cpu, mobo and memory I used for a bit. Intel 805 w/ a ASUS DH 975 board. Was a refund and didn't even charge me the 15% restock fee. I kinda wish I had gotten the infinity back then instead of the Ultra-D, but doesn't make much of a difference now. I had some other people look at it and was told by one "The one hole thing definately looks deeper than the other two" So I guess I'm not too crazy, I'd rather spend the $3 sending it back and feeling better about it than keeping it And hey cool, someone that lives in NY and not NYC. You guys got any biggish LanParties that go on in Rachacha? As Buff's got nothing.

I'm not much into LAN parties, but if you look around there may be something. Rochester's a pretty small and boring city. I guess that makes it easier to get around. I know why your handle is WintersFury now though
